Cam Newton recently revealed on his Instagram that when he joined the Carolina Panthers with his sights on the No. 1 quarterback spot, he wanted to maintain his favorite jersey number he had spent his championship career at Auburn sporting the No. 2. However, his competition for the QB1, Jimmy Clausen, didn’t want him to wear No. 2.
Well, not for free, at least. He wanted a $1 million payout for the number.
“I said, ‘A million dollars, bro?” Newton recalled. “People don’t make $1 million in a lifetime, let alone, I’m gonna give you $1 million for a fucking number.”
When the 2011 No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick took the field on opening day, he put up a record of 422 yards — all while wearing the No. 1.
