Baker Mayfield’s big comeback year with Tampa Bay is earning him millions in incentives and setting himself up for a huge free agency payday.

Success is never guaranteed in the NFL, even for Heisman Trophy-winning No. 1 overall picks like Baker Mayfield.

A number of factors led to Mayfield’s trade from Cleveland to Carolina during the 2022 offseason. Hyped as the Browns’ franchise savior when he was drafted first out of Oklahoma in 2018, inconsistent play on the field, a vocal split with top wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., and a divide with the front office led to Cleveland trading for Deshaun Watson and Baker being deemed a disappointment.

A rough 2022 hardly dispelled that sentiment. Mayfield went 2-8 as a starter last season with a 26.3 QBR between Carolina and the L.A. Rams, forcing him to sign a one-year, $4 million deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as perhaps his final chance to get a meaningful opportunity as an NFL starter at just 28 years old.

The potential for Baker was always there. His 26 touchdown, eight interception season with Cleveland in 2020 when the Browns went 11-5 and won their first playoff game in 26 years was proof. This season with the Bucs is his best season since then, capped by an incredible performance in Sunday’s win over Green Bay that propelled them into the thick of the playoff race.

Statistically, Mayfield had one of the best road QB performances in NFL history. He’s the third player to ever post a perfect 158.3 passer rating on the road with at least 375 passing yards (Mayfield had 381) and four TDs in a 34-20 victory at Lambeau. At 7-7, Tampa Bay is now -135 to win the NFC South, according to FanDuel SportsBook, which will likely be decided in a New Year’s Eve matchup against New Orleans.

Improbably, Mayfield is now seventh in the league in pass attempts that result in TDs, eighth in TD passes, eighth in adjusted yards per attempt, ninth in passer rating, ninth in yards per completion, and ninth in interception percentage.

Those numbers underscore how much the Bucs got themselves a steal this season in Baker, with his $1.7 million cap hit ranked 49th in the league among QBs this season, per Over The Cap, below C.J. Beathard, Cooper Rush, Andy Dalton, Mike White, and Jared Stidham. But Mayfield’s contract came with a potential extra $4.5 million in incentives that will drastically increase his 2023 payday based on his impressive play.

Baker Mayfield Contract Incentives

Many of the incentives Mayfield agreed to before the season, per The 33rd Team, look pretty attainable right now:

  • If Mayfield plays in 66% of Tampa Bay’s offensive snaps: $500,000
  • 75% of offensive snaps: An additional $250,000
  • 85% of offensive snaps: An additional $250,000
  • If Baker finishes the 2023 regular season ranked Top-10 in the NFL or Top-5 in the Conference in: Passer Rating, TD Passes, Total Yards Passing, Completion Percentage, Yards Per Pass: $300,000 each.
  • If he plays in 66% of offensive snaps plus team makes playoffs: $1 million
  • 75% of offensive snaps plus team makes playoffs: An additional $500,000
  • 85% of offensive snaps plus team makes playoffs: An additional $500,000
  • 75% of offensive snaps plus 75% of playoff game snaps: $250,000 per playoff game

Assuming Mayfield stays healthy in the final three games, he’ll get an extra $1 million for snap percentage, several hundred thousand in season-long passing incentives, and an extra $2 million on top of that if Tampa Bay makes the playoffs. There may be no more motivated player to reach the postseason in the league than Mayfield, who could go into free agency in March coming off a redemptive second act that may just lead to the enormous payday many thought he’d eventually get all along. Right now, Baker is more than earning it.

From Bryce Harper and Mike Trout to Mookie, Machado, and beyond, Boardroom rounds up the biggest MLB bags of all time — check out baseball’s biggest numbers!

On Dec. 11, 2000, Alex Rodriguez signed a contract. Instead of sticking around and chasing World Series glory with his fair Seattle Mariners, however, he opted to join the last-place Texas Rangers. Why, you ask? Well, there were 252 million reasons over the course of what was to be the next 10 years.

More than two decades later, that A-Rod contract is still among the top 20 all-time in Major League Baseball by total value. He broke his own record with a $275 million deal with the New York Yankees in 2008; it would not be until Bryce Harper’s own intra-divisional blockbuster 11 years later that this financial championship belt changed waists.

Neither of these guys, however, can claim the No. 1 spot on the hallowed honor roll you’re about to see.

So, who tops the list of the biggest contracts in MLB history, and who’s nipping at his heels right behind.Check out Boardroom’s full rundown below.

With only a handful of teams left standing with a reasonable shot at a national championship, Boardroom looks at the CFP bonuses on the line in the coming days.

The temperature’s dropping — if you’re in New York like this humble sportswriter, it’s dropping a lot — and that can only mean one thing: We’re approaching Bowl Szn.

So, while fans nationwide are preparing to eat their bowl mascots or simply tailgate for their conference championship games, the fine folks here at Boardroom World Headquarters are busy crunching some numbers. Specifically, we’re calculating the hefty bonuses on the line as title games play out and the College Football Playoff picture finally becomes clear.

As we’ve outlined in the past, most college football head coaches have robust bonus structures in their contracts that pay them generously for key milestones. One of those milestones, inevitably, is a college football playoff appearance. So, with the potential field seemingly down to eight teams, Boardroom examines what each head coach could gain or lose with possible selection.

College Football Playoff Bonuses

All odds via FanDuel Sportsbook as of Nov. 29, 2023.

Jim Harbaugh, Michigan Wolverines

2023 Record: 12-0
Next Game: Dec. 2 vs. Iowa (Big Ten Championship Game)
Odds to Make CFP: -6000

CFP Bonus: $500,000

It’s a time of, uh, let’s call it “uncertainty” for Harbaugh at Michigan, but his Wolverines are in the driver’s seat for a playoff bid. And assuming they get one, Michigan’s head man will get at least $500,000 to go with it. That will jump to $1 million if he brings a national title home to Ann Arbor.

Go deeper into Jim Harbaugh’s full contract with Michigan.

Kirby Smart, Georgia Bulldogs

2023 Record: 12-0
Next Game: Dec. 2 vs. Alabama (SEC Championship Game)
Odds to Make CFP: -590

CFP Bonus: $500,000

It only starts at half a million for Smart. If Georgia returns to the national championship game, he will get $750,000 for a loss and $1,000,000 for a win. This is Smart’s second season under his current contract, so we know he already got that $1 million bonus once…

Go deeper on Kirby Smart’s full contract with Georgia.

Dan Lanning, Oregon Ducks

2023 Record: 11-1
Next Game: Dec. 1 vs. Washington (Pac-12 Championship Game)
Odds to Make CFP: -355

CFP Bonus: $250,000

Lanning’s quarter-million-dollar bonus will double if the Ducks win their semifinal game (for you non-mathematicians, that’s $500,000 for reaching the title game). He’ll double that if Oregon hoists the trophy, giving him a cool $1 million in College Football Playoff bonuses.

Nick Saban, Alabama Crimson Tide

2023 Record: 11-1
Next Game: Dec. 2 vs. Georgia (SEC Championship Game)
Odds to Make CFP: +225

CFP Bonus: $400,000

If Alabama is selected for the CFP, Saban will earn one of three bonuses. He’d get at least the aforementioned $400K, but that would jump to $600,000 if the Tide make it to the championship game, and $800,000 if they win it.

Go deeper into Nick Saban’s contract with Alabama.

Steve Sarkisian, Texas Longhorns

2023 Record: 11-1
Next Game: Dec. 2 vs. Oklahoma State (Big 12 Championship Game)
Odds to Make CFP: +142

CFP Bonus: $100,000

For Sark to claim that six-figure bonus, he must guide the Longhorns to a Big 12 Championship Game win. Luckily for him, he’d earn another $100,000 for doing so. He can also earn an additional $375,000 for winning the national championship — $125,000 for reaching the title game and another $250,000 for winning it.

Go deeper on Steve Sarkisian’s contract with Texas.

Kalen DeBoer, Washington Huskies

2023 Record: 12-0
Next Game: Dec. 1 vs. Oregon (Pac-12 Championship Game)
Odds to Make CFP: +285

CFP Bonus: $400,000

DeBoer’s $400,000 will more than double if Washington reaches the championship game to $850,000. Oddly enough, he’d only get an additional $50,000 for winning the whole damn thing.

Mike Norvell, Florida State Seminoles

2023 Record: 12-0
Next Game: Dec. 2 vs. Louisville (ACC Championship Game)
Odds to Make CFP: -152

CFP Bonus: $300,000

For now, Norvell will get $300,000 if Florida State is selected to the playoff field. That increases to $500,000 with a win and $800,000 with a national championship. With the CFP expanding to 12 teams next season, he’ll have a chance to earn even more, concluding with a $950,000 title bonus.

Go deeper on Mike Norvell’s contract with Florida State.

Ryan Day, Ohio State Buckeyes

2023 Record: 11-1
Next Game: TBA
Odds to Make CFP: +1800

CFP Bonus: $250,000

Day knows, at this point, that his destiny is no longer in his hands. The Buckeyes are long shots to make the Playoff, but if they do, he can count on a quarter million dollars to go with it — $350,000 if they advance to the Championship Game.

Go deeper on Ryan Day’s contract with Ohio State.

Who’s the 49ers’ highest-paid player? What are their biggest contracts on the books? Here’s what you need to know about SF’s salary cap spending in 2023.

As it relates to that fantastic beast known as the NFL salary cap, Kyle Shanahan’s San Francisco 49ers hit the lottery: Not only did they find a diamond-in-the-rough quarterback in Brock Purdy seemingly out of nowhere, but they snagged him with the very last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, making him the single most affordable full-time starting QB in football.

One day, he’ll receive a healthy contract extension that definitively changes his and his family’s lives forever. Under the rules of the league’s collective bargaining agreement, however, he’s not eligible to sign one until after the 2024 season is over, enabling GM John Lynch and Co. to compete here and now while still stockpiling a prodigious cache of cap space for future blockbuster moves.

That got us thinking, then, about what the team’s biggest salaries on the books really are before their inevitable cash-splashing next season, as well as their largest contracts overall.

Boardroom has all your 2023 49ers salary cap particulars — let’s dive in.

Who’s the Eagles’ highest-paid player? What are their biggest contracts on the books? Here’s what you need to know about Philly’s salary cap spending in 2023.

The Philadelphia Eagles have never flown higher than when Nick Foles — yes, Nick Foles! — was under center keying one of the more unlikely Super Bowl runs in recent memory. In the several years since, however, front office boss Howie Roseman has built a far surer thing.

These days, the Philly boys are one of the toughest outs in football week to week, and with a true franchise QB in Jalen Hurts conducting the offense in pleasing balance with a typically fearsome defense, there may be no more compelling contender in the NFC.

Taylor Swift is making a windfall from ticket sales to The Eras Tour concert film — so much that she out-earned almost every NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL player’s annual salary in one weekend.

Taylor Swift – she of the sales and streaming records – shrewdly re-recorded albums, sold-out three-hour shows, and bizarrely savvy crossover into the NFL milieu, has been well-paid for her handiwork. Thanks to her professional tirelessness, the prolific musician is on track for billionaire status before she turns 40.

But there’s no income like passive income.

Thanks to her equity in The Eras Tour — 57% of ticket revenues, to be exact — the concert film based on the eponymous global sensation that premiered on Oct. 11 in Los Angeles, Travis Kelce’s favorite singer earned an estimated $55 million from the film’s opening weekend gross, reportedly $95 to 97 million.

That’s a hell of a bag for someone who’s admittedly no stranger to them. That got us thinking, however: How does that $55 million weekend haul compare to the annual salaries of the best-paid athletes in the big four US sports leagues?

Perhaps you won’t be surprised to hear that there isn’t a single player, for instance, in the NHL or Major League Baseball this season who can rival that number — but that’s far from the whole story.

Let’s dive into the eye-popping Eras Tour movie comparisons in more detail below.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Movie Earnings vs. NFL Salaries

1. Ravens QB Lamar Jackson: $80,000,000 salary in 2023
2. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes: $59,350,000
3. Taylor’s Eras weekend: $55,000,000
4. 49ers DE Nick Bosa: $51,010,000
t5. Browns QB Deshaun Watson: $46,000,000
t5. Giants QB Daniel Jones: $46,000,000

Also worth noting? $55 million is 4.49 times the $12.25 million salary Travis Kelce will earn this season, and nearly equal to the $57.25 million total value of his contract with the Kansas City Chiefs that runs through the 2025 NFL season.

Taylor Swift vs. NBA Salaries

2. Warriors PG Stephen Curry: $51,915,615 salary in 2023-24
t3. Lakers SF LeBron James: $47,607,350

t2. Astros SP Justin Verlander: $43,333,333

Who’s the Cowboys’ highest-paid player? What are their biggest contracts on the books? Here’s what you need to know about Dallas’s salary cap spending in 2023.

I have something to state for the record, and you can either love it, hate it, or refuse to sleep again until you’ve killed it with fire: The Dallas Cowboys have already won.

Sure, they haven’t notched a Super Bowl championship since the 1995 NFL season, but is any team in global sports effectively guaranteed to remain in the headlines regardless of their on-field performances quite like Jerry Jones’ bunch? Their ability to command so much of the zeitgeist means that we shouldn’t be surprised to learn that the Boys are, for instance, the single most profitable sports team on earth.

It’s easy to get lost in the sauce as it relates to merch sales, sponsorships, and other portfolio flexes like Legends Hospitality, Complexity Gaming, and an endless list of sold-out concerts and special events at AT&T Stadium — but what about the approach to spending on the team’s roster itself? Do these investments do justice to the grandiose, 1-of-1 nature of the brand, or are we looking at something else entirely?

That got us exploring just what team’s biggest salaries on the books really are for 2023, as well as their largest contracts overall.

Below, Boardroom has all your Cowboys salary cap particulars for the current NFL season. Check it out.

He’s been the face of the Penguins for almost two decades — what does that mean for his bottom line? Let’s break down all the Penguins’ Sidney Crosby salary particulars.

Mario Lemieux. Jaromír Jágr. Sidney Crosby.

Drafted No. 1 overall by Pittsburgh in 2005, “The Kid” has played his way into Penguins royalty over the near two-decade span he’s donned black and yellow. Like LeBron James in hoops, Crosby came into the NHL as a teenager backed by ridiculous hype, seemingly almost too much for one to live up to, yet he somehow has.

Entering his 19th season at age 36, Crosby has more than met expectations, leading the Pens to three Stanley Cups, including back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017. He’s been named an All-Star nine times, has won the Hart and Art Ross trophies twice each, and earned honors as a member of the NHL 2010s All-Decade team. That’s not even to mention his international accolades with Canada, either, which include multiple gold medals and game-winning goals.

Sid has been at the top of the game for so long now that the up-and-coming can’t-miss prospects, most recently Chicago’s Connor Bedard, are being compared to him. In turn, he’s been paid handsomely over his career, racking up over $150 million in career earnings on the ice — more than any other player in the history of the league.

As he approaches the final seasons of a 12-year deal he signed with Pittsburgh in 2012, let’s break down what the Penguins’ Sidney Crosby contract and salary details really look like dollar for dollar.

Sidney Crosby Contract Details & Salary

All dollar figures via Spotrac.

Years: 12
Total value: $104,400,000
Average annual value: $8,700,000
Free agency: 2025

2023-24 salary: $3,000,000

After playing out his first contract extension, which was valued at $43.5 million over five years, the Penguins and Crosby decided that Pittsburgh would be his only professional home, with the two sides agreeing to a massive 12-year agreement with a total value of $104,400,00 ahead of the 2012-13 season.

  • The deal was front-loaded, meaning his base salary has actually declined over the lifetime of the new deal, which is why his salary for this season is just $3 million. Here’s how much Crosby was paid for each season under this 12-year deal:
  • 2013-14 to 2015-16: $12,000,000
  • 2016-17 to 2017-18: $10,900,000
  • 2018-19: $10,000,000
  • 2019-20: $9,000,000
  • 2020-21: $9,600,000

The Avalanche center adds to his Stanley Cup credentials with one of the NHL’s biggest deals — Boardroom breaks down the details of the Avs’ Nathan MacKinnon contract.

Nathan MacKinnon has been a pivotal piece of the Colorado Avalanche franchise since the team drafted him first overall in 2013. After a few years of mediocrity to start his career in Colorado, the Avalanche have established themselves as a powerhouse in the NHL, and MacKinnon is a big reason why.

The six-time All-Star is widely regarded as one of the best players in the league, evident by the huge contract extension the team handed him ahead of the 2022 season. Just how much is Colorado paying its star player? Let’s break down the Avs’ Nathan MacKinnon contract.

Nathan MacKinnon Contract Details & Salary

All dollar figures via Spotrac.

Years: 8
Total value: $100,800,000
Average annual value: $12,600,000

2023-24 salary: $16,500,000

  • Base salary: $775,000
  • Signing bonus: $15,725,000

Free agency: 2031

It’s not atypical for a player to have one of his best seasons in a contract year, setting himself up for a potential payday when hitting free agency — there’s perhaps no more hallowed tradition across sports. However, in the case of Nathan MacKinnon, he put forth his best season to date after putting ink to paper to earn distinction as hockey’s highest-paid player.

The Avalanche extended MacKinnon, rightly regarded as one of the top talents across in the NHL, ahead of the 2022-23 campaign to the tune of eight years and $100.8 million. He repaid his team immediately by putting up a career-high 111 points last season. If MacKinnon can maintain even a portion of what he’s capable of throughout the life of this deal, Colorado, which hoisted the Stanley Cup in 2022, should be pleased with having shelled out this hefty contract to keep the party going in the Mile High City.

Nathan MacKinnon’s Career NHL Earnings

CAREER NHL EARNINGS THROUGH 2023-24: $69,287,500

PROJECTED CAREER NHL EARNINGS THROUGH 2030-31: $170,087,500

Who’s the Bills’ highest-paid player? What are their biggest contracts on the books? Here’s what you need to know about Buffalo’s salary cap spending in 2023.

One day, the Buffalo Bills are going to break through. In the meantime, GM Brandon Beane and head coach Sean McDermott have spent the last several years putting in yeoman’s work to ensure that the championship window stays open for the beasts of the AFC East for as long as possible.

A huge part of that? Locking in as many franchise cornerstones as possible, including quarterback Josh Allen, wide receiver Stefon Diggs, and future Hall of Fame edge rusher Von Miller.

But of course, Super Bowls aren’t simply won by superstars, but with an ideal mix of veteran role players and phenoms on affordable rookie-scale deals.

That got us thinking — what’s the full rundown of the team’s biggest salaries on the books for 2023, as well as their largest contracts overall?

Who’s the Chiefs’ highest-paid player? What are their biggest contracts on the books? Here’s what you need to know about Kansas City’s salary cap spending in 2023.

When you’re the king, heavy is the head. Such is the condition of the Kansas City Chiefs, the NFL’s defending Super Bowl champions and winners of two of the last four. Andy Reid’s team has a target on its back bigger than Swope Park. And with all that success comes the need to invest bigger and bigger in a winning nucleus of players that once again figures to be the core of a championship contender.

The NFL salary cap, meanwhile, forces front office bosses like KC general manager Brett Veach to get creative with his financial outlays year over year. Particularly as it relates to high-level offensive stars, restructured deals are the name of the game with so many mouths to feed.

Calcio and cash! From Torino to the San Siro and beyond, find out who stands alone atop the Serie A salary mountain this season in Italian football.

Remember when Serie A was the center of soccer universe? Before the Premier League was first consumed by ownership groups backed by unprecedented mega-billions in the aughts, Italian football — calcio, beg your pardon — was home to legends like Ronaldo (the thicc one), Batistuta, Maldini, Baggio, and Zidane.

The balance of power has shifted over the past 15-20 years to say the least, but the star power still surges and Italy’s top flight remains home to many of the impact players on its national team that won continental gold at Euro 2020. That got us thinking, however, about one big question: In a sport increasingly dominated by those mega-billions, who owns the distinction of being this season’s biggest earner among the Boot’s finest clubs?

Let’s dive into Boardroom’s full ranking of the highest-paid players in Serie A for the 2023-24 campaign below.

From the capital to Catalunya and beyond, find out who stands alone atop the La Liga salary mountain this season in Spanish football.

Spain may not be the center of the soccer universe anymore. Barcelona is no longer the core of the Spanish national team’s greatest era with an extra bonus named Lionel Messi, nor is Ronaldo a world-beater in white for Real Madrid, but fans of the Beautiful Game can still count on La Liga to bring the thrills.

Indeed, some things never change. But if you had to guess the most expensive player wage in the league now that those two age-old rivals have moved on — to say nothing of the Benzemas, Piqués, Bales, and Iniestas of the world — the correct answer might just surprise you.

So, who earns the most moneyed of distinctions this season? Let’s roll through Boardroom’s definitive ranking of the highest-paid La Liga players for 2023-24 below.

Who’s No. 1? It may not be who you think — from the grizzled vets to the fantastic phenoms, check out all the highest-paid hockey players on the ice this season.

The best overall player in hockey? Sure, your mileage may vary, and if you’re a stone-cold homer for a team whose fans are known for being, shall we say, acutely territorial, you can’t be expected to see the world for precisely what it is.

But if you’re out here simply to call balls and strikes (and mix a few metaphors while you’re at it), you may be compelled to say the words “Connor McDavid,” winner of the Hart Trophy in two of the last three seasons. But what if I told you that the Edmonton Oilers superstar, for all of his exploits on the ice, doesn’t currently earn a salary that lands him even among the top 15 highest-paid NHL players this season?

Kinda makes you think, doesn’t it?

So, who actually gets the distinction of being No. 1 on the money list? Check out Boardroom’s list of the highest-paid NHL players for the 2023-24 campaign by total single-year cash — and stick around at the end of this article for a definitive ranking of the biggest NHL contracts overall across the league.

Playing on a team that boasts a slew of All-Stars, Kelsey Plum finds a way to stick out. Boardroom jumps into the details of the Kelsey Plum contract with the Aces.

To say Kelsey Plum has lived up to expectations as a WNBA player would be an understatement. Here’s a list of what the Las Vegas Aces star has accomplished since being drafted first overall in 2017:

  • 2022 WNBA Champion
  • 2022 WNBA All-Star Game MVP
  • 2022 All-WNBA First Team
  • 2021 WNBA Sixth Player of the Year
  • Two-time WNBA All-Star (2022, 2023)

And those are just her WNBA accolades, leaving out all the records she broke on the NCAA level at Washington and the gold medal she won for Team USA in women’s 3v3 hoops at the 2020 Olympics. Plum is looking to add to this list, helping her team sit atop the Western Conference of the WNBA by a wide margin while averaging 18.7 points and 4.5 assists per game this season.

A pivotal piece for the defending champs, Plum’s contract will be the second-largest cap hit on the team next season, just behind MVP A’ja Wilson — Boardroom breaks down Plum’s current contract.

Kelsey Plum Contract Extension & Salary Details

All figures courtesy of Her Hoops Stats.

Years: 2
Total value: $400,000
Average annual value: $200,000
Free agency: 2025

Just a week after earning WNBA All-Star Game MVP in 2022, the Aces signed their southpaw shooter to a two-year, $400,000 contract extension. At the time, Plum had one year remaining on a three-year, $423,250 contract she signed after playing out her entry-level deal.

Plum will turn 30 in the final year of this extension, but if she’s able to maintain the level of play she’s had over the last couple of seasons, it wouldn’t be surprising to see her cash in when she hits free agency in 2025.

Joe Burrow Contract & Salary Breakdown https://boardroom.tv/joe-burrow-contract-extension-salary-bengals/ Fri, 08 Sep 2023 00:30:00 +0000 https://boardroom.tv/?p=67142 The face of the Bengals has secured his future in rip-roaring fashion -- check out all the numbers behind Cincinnati's massive Joe Burrow contract extension.

The face of the Bengals has secured his future in rip-roaring fashion — check out all the numbers behind Cincinnati’s massive Joe Burrow contract extension.

A year ago, we saw Joe Burrow key a famous Cincinnati Bengals run to the Super Bowl. You would have to forgive us if we were already looking ahead to what that milestone meant for a possible contract extension when he became eligible for the first time ahead of the 2023 season, because we were.

This year, Jalen Hurts — like Burrow, a 2020 NFL Draft selection and therefore on the same extension eligibility schedule — did the very same thing. Hurts steered the Philadelphia Eagles to a conference championship. A couple of short months later, he secured a record-setting deal that made him the highest-paid NFL player in history by average annual contract value. Hurts’ record was quickly eclipsed by Justin Herbert‘s five year and $262.5 million contract with the Chargers.

Well, we now have all the proof we need that the Philly phenom set the market in an explosive offseason of quarterback spending. As first reported by Adam Schefter, the Cincy signal-caller is now the owner of the richest contract in NFL history: five years and an incredible $275 million.

Nice work if you can get it, and the surest sign yet that Burrow figures to be the face of this franchise into his 30s at the very, very least.

The news arrives as the former LSU Tigers national champ and Heisman Trophy winner was due to enter the final year of his rookie-scale contract. He was scheduled to make $5.5 million in 2023, but we can now fully expect singing bonus money from the new deal to sweeten his salary number here and now even before the extension years officially kick in.

With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at the numbers behind the Bengals’ rip-roaring Joe Burrow contract extension.

From Hurts and Herbert to a 10-year megadeal to rule them all, check out Boardroom’s full rundown of the largest NFL contracts of all time.

Everybody out here wants to talk about setting the market. It’s especially important in the big ol’ dang ol’ NFL because there’s no notion of a “max contract” like there is in the NBA.

But sometimes, there’s a man. Well, he’s the man for his time and place. He fits right in there. And that’s Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs, who signed the largest NFL contract of all time after this third season in the league. The deal contains twice as many years as all but one entry on the list you’re about to read, and more than twice the value of anyone outside the top eight. That’s not setting the market; it’s folding it into a pretzel.

Over the course of subsequent offseasons, however, several rival QBs have signed deals that, while not as gargantuan tip to tail, actually exceed Big Pat in some key metrics.

So, what does the all-time honor roll of football deals actually look like here and now? Check out Boardroom’s full honor roll of the biggest contracts in NFL history, starting with the man in KC whose trophy case needs its own vacation home.

It pays to have a great backup arm, but what does it pay to be one? Check out who wins the NFL’s backup QB salary race for the 2023 season.

Trey Lance, Jimmy Garoppolo, Brock Purdy. Remember them? The San Francisco 49ers entered the 2022 NFL season absolutely buzzing about their quarterback room led by the former, who was a tantalizing prospect, and that middle guy, known as a steady-handed veteran. Well, they both got hurt. In stepped Purdy, the very last pick in the 2022 draft.

All the guy did was guide the Niners to the NFC West title and two playoff victories. Suddenly, entering the 2023 season, Lance is backing up Dak Prescott in Dallas, Gucci Garopp is a Las Vegas Raider, and Purdy is THE guy in the Bay.

Yep, it pays to have an able backup quarterback or two. That got us thinking: What does it pay to be a backup quarterback?

Folks, no spoiler alerts or snarky dissembling, even though that’s incredibly fun to do. Let’s get right into the numbers — behold the race for the title of highest-paid backup QB in the NFL for 2023!

Who’s No. 1? Boardroom breaks down this year’s highest-paid wide receivers in the NFL, both by 2023 salary and total contract value.

Unlike certain position groups (*cough,* running backs, *cough*), a list of the highest-paid wide receivers in the NFL isn’t going to blow you away. Not because the numbers are boring — who couldn’t use an extra $26 million a year? — but because the expected suspects populate the top of the list.

Think about it: Who would you expect to make the most money out of any wide receiver? It’d have to be someone who is a bona fide superstar and someone who signed a new contract in the last year or two. Someone like Davante Adams in Las Vegas. Or, say, Tyreek Hill, who went from Kansas City to Miami via trade before the 2022 season and promptly signed a monster deal with the Dolphins.

But which other receivers are pulling in dollars like they’re pinpoint bombs from Patrick Mahomes? Check out the top 10 highest-paid wide receivers in the NFL for 2023, and stick around for the top WR contracts by total value.

From supermax stars to ascendant phenoms, check out our definitive ranking of the highest-paid players in the NBA.

Ahead of the 2023 NFL season, several young quarterbacks broke the $50 million per year threshold with spiffy new contract extensions worth upwards of $250 million. Yeah, that’s nice — but when it comes to showstopping bags, an NBA player doesn’t even need a single All-Star appearance on his resume to secure that sort of package.

Such is life in the Association, where the concept of the “max deal” as determined by the league’s collective bargaining agreement all but guarantees that young phenoms get arguably overpaid while basketball’s foremost superstars are prevented from earning a sum commensurate with their true value.

As it relates to the 2023-24 campaign, there’s obviously a lot to talk about. But let’s start with a question: Across the wide NBA world, who’s the No. 1 earner here and now?

Boxing’s pound-for-pound king got candid about how money really flows through the fight game on Boardroom’s “Out of Office” with Rich Kleiman.

When the subject turned to the messy, chaotic business of boxing, Terence Crawford put it bluntly.

“Boxing is one of the most corrupt sports there is,” the undisputed welterweight champion told Rich Kleiman on the latest episode of Boardroom’s “Out of Office.”

Click here to listen to the full episode.

“We’ll take a $5 million guarantee not knowing that there’s $30 million that we missed,” Bud said, admitting that he used to trust the process of contract negotiations without being so hands-on himself.

“I used to be that guy. ‘Let me take this [money] and just do my job. Let me sign this contract and get this guarantee.’ But once you get older and once you start noticing that you’re in control of your own business, ‘Okay, so, let me see the contracts. Let me see what’s really coming in,'” he said.

As soon as Bud took that greater level of control over his own fight finances, he saw a problematic pattern that rarely placed the fighters first.

“Once I started asking those type of questions or learning a little bit here and there, then it became a problem between me and my old promoter,” he said in reference to Bob Arum’s Top Rank, “and at that point in time, I knew it was time to go.”

But Crawford didn’t just leave the Top Rank stable for enigmatic manager Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions. Since PBC is technically an event series rather than a promotion — Haymon is a manager and federal law says he can’t also promote — the undisputed champ is taking after Floyd Mayweather and getting into the business for himself.

After all, no one has the luxury of pretending that’s not where the real money is made in the sport of boxing.

“I don’t see [Floyd] trying to give the game to the younger fighters because he’s a promoter now. I can’t give everybody the game if I’m one of them now,” Bud said.

Poetically enough, Al Haymon famously managed Mayweather before the all-time legend ascended to become a billion-dollar industry unto himself.

“It’s a business at the end of the day. So, if they made all this money on our backs as fighters and now I’m a promoter, I’m gonna do the same thing that they once was doing and just say, ‘It’s just the game of the business.'”

The four-time NBA All-Star is Monaco-bound. Boardroom’s Gabe Oshin breaks down why more players entering the twilight of their careers may want to consider a similar move.

Kemba Walker is trading Dallas for Monaco.

When news broke on July 21 that the four-time NBA All-Star would sign with AS Monaco, many expressed disbelief. After all, the decision will lock Walker out of the league for the upcoming season.

After playing for four NBA teams in 12 seasons, the former UConn standout is heading to join the EuroLeague. In Monaco, he is expected to join fellow Americans Jordan Loyd, John Brown, and Alpha Diallo on the roster.

Walker joined the Mavericks ahead of the 2022-23 season, coming over from the Detroit Pistons, where he agreed to a contract buyout. However, he never found his stride in Dallas, and the team waived him in January 2023.

Monaco is best known for its luxurious landscapes and high-class events. Through the years, it has become a destination for some of the world’s wealthiest, as the country boasts no income tax.

Boardroom’s Gabe Oshin points out that Walker was likely to take in the NBA league minimum of $2.8 million this season, which would only net around $900,000, unless he found himself playing for a team in tax-less Florida or Texas.

Even more appealing? The AS Monaco season is only 68 games, as opposed to the NBA’s 82-game regular season. Plus, there are no back-to-back games on the schedule, and away games are only a four hour flight away at the very most. Could be a nice combination for his veteran joints.

So, why don’t more NBA stars head overseas as they enter the twilight of their careers? Call it a “reverse Messi” if you will.

Let’s break it down.

The Messi Effect is real and could enable more blockbuster MLS moves from top global stars. As the transfer rumor mill turns, let’s talk Mbappé and Neymar.

MessiMania is everywhere across the American sporting landscape and global soccer at large — and for good reason.

Lionel Messi joined Inter Miami and Major League Soccer on a free transfer and made his debut just a couple short weeks ago, bringing old FC Barcelona friends Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba with him along the way. In just four Leagues Cup matches as of this writing, the footballing GOAT has scored an eye-popping seven goals. He’s already atop the Herons’ season leaderboard thanks to a run featuring multiple jaw-dropping free kicks.

MLS and streaming partner Apple have done an impressive job marketing Messi so far, too, with Inter Miami’s social feeds growing at explosive rates as subscriptions to Apple’s MLS Season Pass took a leap in step with the legendary Argentine’s stateside arrival. Now, Some of the world’s biggest stars are taking notice of the unique opportunity America presents — most notably, Messi’s former Paris Saint-Germain teammates Kylian Mbappé and Neymar.

Like Messi before them, neither superstar is understood to be happy with his current roles at the French club, both are reportedly interested in MLS to some degree, and Mbappé in particular is the subject of more rumors this week from the Glasgow-based Daily Record about the curious feasibility of a stateside swoop.

It’s all a rather insane turnaround for a league that’s dreamt of this very scenario for decades. However, there are some major hurdles that stand in the way of the French World Cup winner and the Brazilian star man joining Lucky Leo in MLS.

Most notably, the league’s own rules!

Major League Soccer’s “secondary transfer window,” by which under-contract can be bought or traded to other clubs, came and went on Aug. 2. Players currently out of contract can still sign with the league’s 29 clubs until rosters freeze on Sept. 15. Mbappé’s contract with PSG runs until next June, while Neymar won’t hit free agency until 2025.

Technically, the Parisian club could mutually agree to part ways with either player and tear up their contracts, making them free agents; that’s not remotely likely at this time. However, if we’ve learned anything over 27 years of Major League Soccer, it’s that its rules are meant to be broken when a transformative opportunity like this rolls around.

David Beckham wants to come to LA Galaxy? Let’s make up some new rules to bring him aboard — the birth of the designated player rule, specifically — and give him the option to buy a future MLS team at a heavy discount, which turned out to be Inter Miami.

No single MLS club can actually afford to pay Messi his fair market value under current salary rules? Let’s hand him a share of revenues from MLS Season Pass subscriptions and a massive deal with league partner Adidas, accusations of cap circumvention be damned.

Sign up for our newsletter

Get on our list for weekly sports business, industry trends, interviews, and more.

As things stand, Mbappé or Neymar are under contract, which means a PSG buyout or a massive transfer fee would be required to land them this year. If that was indeed doable, however, you can bet that any procedural red tape on the MLS side would be done away with post-haste. At that point, spirited and raucous discussions would rage over which MLS club could or should sign each player, how it all affects the league’s insistence on competitive balance, and whether either player would also demand a Messi-like revenue share of some kind with Apple, Adidas, or some other MLS partner.

In short, while rules are in place that would seemingly prevent prime-era, superstar-level players under contract from coming to MLS until after the 2023 season, rules are meant to be broken in this part of the world when it comes to the foremost icons of the Beautiful Game.

When it comes to athlete windfalls, nothing beats packing your bags for Saudi Arabia. In this part of the world, however, the NBA stays the king; you don’t even need to have an All-Star nod to your name to sign a rookie extension worth over $200 million.

But what if I told you that nobody in the NBA or MLB has ever signed a contract larger than the biggest one ever signed in the NFL?

And what if I told you that this lucky quarterback is actually only No. 4 in this year’s NFL salary rankings?

With that in mind, check out Boardroom’s list of the highest-paid NFL players for the 2023 season by both single-year cash and average annual contract value — and stick around for the end as we roll through the biggest NFL contracts overall currently on the books.

One of the game’s most dynamic big men has a gigantic deal to match — check out the details behind the Lakers’ eye-popping Anthony Davis contract extension.

Not content to let Boston’s Jaylen Brown and his groundbreaking $305 million supermax extension have all the fun, Anthony Davis set the summer of 2023 ablaze with an NBA salary record of his own on Aug. 4. As first reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, AD and his Los Angeles Lakers tacked three years onto the eight-time All-Star’s existing max extension on his first day of eligibility.

The terms are head-turning to the point of whiplash: three years and $186 million through the 2027-28 NBA season, good for the highest average annual value ever packed into a contract extension in the big four US sports leagues to date.

That’s Hall of Fame money befitting a player likely to end up enshrined at Springfield one day.

With that in mind, let’s take a closer look into the numbers behind the Lakers’ record-setting Anthony Davis contract extension.

In making the jump to New York, AR12 restructured his gaudy deal — check out the numbers behind the Jets’ revamped Aaron Rodgers contract.

In March 2022, Aaron Rodgers stole headlines when he signed the biggest contract in NFL history by average annual value, committing to the Green Bay Packers through the 2025 season — one in which he’ll turn 42 years of age. But what a difference barely a year makes.

Just 13 months later, Rodgers’ career with the only NFL team he’d ever known was over. He found himself traded to the New York Jets for a package of draft picks. Click here for the details of that seismic deal.

In order to give themselves the best possible chance to win during what is surely the tail end of Rodgers’ decorated career, however, the Jets and their franchise’s face agreed to a restructured version of his fat Packers extension that freed up key salary cap space heading into the 2023 season — check out the numbers behind Gang Green’s reworked Aaron Rodgers contract.

The Bolts QB has officially struck gold — take a closer look at the details of the LA Chargers’ blockbuster Justin Herbert contract extension.

The Eagles’ Jalen Hurts, a 2020 NFL Draft selection quickly proving himself as a premier talent across the league, secured a record-setting contract extension in his first window of eligibility that made him the highest-paid NFL player in history by average annual contract value. That gave us all the proof we need that the Philly phenom set the market in what was always expected to be an explosive 2023 offseason for quarterback spending. Then, imminent free agent Lamar Jackson followed suit and reset the market himself with the Baltimore Ravens.

But on July 25, as first reported by Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert — himself a 2020 draftee and therefore on the same extension cadence as Hurts — was not to be outdone. He inked a showstopper of a deal and put everyone else to shame: five years and $262.5 million.

That’s the largest average annual value on an NFL contract in the history of the league at time of signing.

The former Oregon Ducks standout had the makings of a star from the jump, following Offensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2020 with his first Pro Bowl nod a season later. And while he doesn’t have the conference championship credentials of Hurts and Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow or the MVP exploits of Jackson so far, he can say goodbye to the $4.234 million figure he was due to earn in 2023 on his rookie deal (even before the extension years officially kick in the following season, he’ll be swimming in signing bonus money).

With that in mind, it’s time to dive into the finer salary particulars behind the Chargers’ eye-popping Justin Herbert contract extension.

From record-breaking extensions to major splashes in free agency, check out the most expensive contracts players are signing ahead of the 2023 NFL season.

If you thought the money was flowing ahead of the 2022 NFL season, you’re gonna love what this year has in store. With a former MVP hitting free agency and the stars of the 2020 NFL Draft class becoming eligible for contract extensions for the very first time, you’d best prepare yourself for over a billion buckos to be committed to quarterbacks alone.

Perhaps well over a billion.

So, as pen hits paper and head-turning, eye-popping deals get locked in — whether via free agency, extensions, or the much-maligned franchise tag — Boardroom is keeping a running count of the biggest, most expensive bags around the league, from Daniel Jones to Derek Carr to Roquan and Geno Smith (no relation!) and all points beyond.

Oh, and Lamar Jackson’s record-setting deal that pays him more on a per-season basis than any player ever.

Witness the biggest NFL contracts of 2023 below. And don’t forget to breathe when you see all those zeroes.

Injuries derailed his NFL career’s scorching start, but he’s back with a vengeance and ready to earn a big extension — let’s dive into the details of the Giants’ rookie scale Saquon Barkley contract.

Saquon Barkley is motivated by a desire to become one of the greatest running backs in NFL history. While the rest of the world is busy staring at his massive quads, Barkley is running full speed at this season’s rushing title — and a lucrative contract extension upon his first-ever free agency next spring.

After a legendary collegiate career at Penn State, the New York Giants selected Barkley second in the 2018 draft. Walking into the league with high expectations, his position in the draft signified generational talent and entitled him to a four-year, $31,194,751 rookie contract, plus a fifth-year team option worth another $7.2 million in 2022. To put that into perspective, reports at the time suggested that the Cleveland Browns were “strongly considering” drafting Saquon with their first overall pick; the last running back to go No. 1 was Ki-Jana Carter all the way back in 1995.

The PSU standout hit the ground running at the Meadowlands, rushing for back-to-back thousand-yard seasons in his first two years as a pro. However, injuries plagued the runner in the 2019 and 2020 NFL seasons, and as he was forcibly sidelined, it was worth wondering whether the super-talented back would be able to return with the same speed, strength, and route-running ability.

The answer to that question was yes, but that doesn’t mean he scampered straight to the open market and cashed in. Rather, the Giants smacked him with the franchise tag only for the player to refuse to accept it.

To avoid a standoff that ran the risk of stretching into the 2023 regular season, he came to terms on a separate one-year deal — with that in mind, let’s dig into the details of the Giants’ Saquon Barkley contract.

Saquon Barkley Contract Details & Salary

Salary data via Spotrac.

Current extension (2023)

Years: 1
Total value: $11,000,000
Guaranteed at signing: $10,100,000
Free agency: 2024

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, this deal includes three incentives worth $303,000 each for a total of $909,000:

  • 1,350 rushing yards AND a Giants playoff berth
  • 11 touchdowns scored
  • 65 receptions

Rookie contract terms (2018-22)

Years: 5 (including team option)
Total value: $38,601,750
Guaranteed at signing: $31,194,751

In 2022, Barkley’s $7.217 million salary actually made him the No. 8 highest-paid running back by total cash compensation despite his deal being at rookie scale — he surely commands a healthy big bag in free agency despite the market for running backs being so seriously undervalued, but his standoff with the Giants over the use of the franchise tag will continue to loom large throughout 2023 and perhaps into 2024, as his latest deal does not contain any language preventing the G-Men from tagging him once again and denying his entry into free agency anew.

What happens when you won’t accept the NFL’s franchise tag and miss the deadline for an extension? As training camps return, let’s talk tenders.

On March 15, the Dallas Cowboys cut bait on franchise running back Ezekiel Elliott, preferring to eat millions in dead salary cap money rather than continue to pay him. Eight days later, backfield brother-in-arms Tony Pollard accepted the franchise tag, officially making him the team’s RB1 for 2023 even as he sought a long-term contract extension to put down roots in Big D.

On July 17, the deadline came and went for Pollard, as well as every other player given the often-controversial tag, to agree to a bigger, longer deal, pegging his salary number at a $10.091 million figure predetermined for running backs and kicking his free agency down the road an extra year.

The offseason’s other two franchise-tagged RBs received no such clarity, however: Saquon Barkley of the Giants and Josh Jacobs of the Raiders not only did not find common ground with their teams on extensions, but continue to refuse to accept the franchise tender, placing them in limbo heading into the 2023 NFL season as training camps begin to open up around the league.

So, how did we get here?

Under the immutable salary rules of the NFL, what can and cannot happen next for Saquon and JJ?

In the bigger picture of the league, what does all this say about the depressed state of the salary market for running backs?

Time to get into some details and hard truths. Let’s talk tenders — but not the crispy, juicy kind.

The Franchise Tag and What it All Means for Barkley & Jacobs

1. Neither Josh Jacobs nor Saquon Barkley are under-contract NFL players as of this time.

They’re not full-on excommunicado, but them’s the rules. They can play on a one-year agreement or not at all.

With that in mind, it’s widely expected that neither player will report to his incumbent team’s mandatory training camp when each begins on July 25.

2. Meanwhile, the Giants‘ and Raiders’ training camps are going to be rife with distractions that could have been prevented.

Not every team is legitimately afraid to pay running backs, but the vast majority of teams do not consider them candidates for long-term, robustly guaranteed contract extensions due to durability/longevity concerns. It’s gotten to the point that it’s increasingly rare to see a running back selected in the first round of the NFL Draft at all; there are several reasons for this, but it shouldn’t go unmentioned that first-rounders’ rookie contracts are all 100% guaranteed as of 2023. (In fact, Falcons rookie Bijan Robinson actually has this year’s highest salary number at the position.)

And here we are.

3. The league’s current CBA allows players less recourse in contractual standoffs than the previous one.

Remember when practically every player under the sun who wanted a bigger bag simply held out from training camp? Well, those days have been over for more than a decade now, and the league’s 2020 collective bargaining agreement made fines for unexcused absences from mandatory camp untenably accumulative.

Notably, these two running backs in question aren’t under contract, so they cannot be fined for missing camp. Alas, a player does not magically become a free agent if he refuses to sign for long enough — say what you want about the franchise tag being anti-labor (it is) and suppressive to the free movement of talent (it is), but such a glaring loophole would defeat the entire purpose of the mechanism as such.

4. If they remain unsigned, inactive players by the start of the regular season, Jacobs and Barkley are not eligible to receive weekly game checks.

The respective teams that drafted them still control their rights, but with no contract in place, neither is eligible to receive an NFL check.

5. NFL players continue to hate the franchise tag nearly unanimously.

This is easy to understand. While other top leagues have measures in place to postpone or conditionalize free agency in order to help teams keep their own players — the NBA and NHL have restricted free agency with matching rights for first-timers; Major League Baseball requires six years of “service time” — only the NFL allows a team to prevent a player from entering free agency fully against his own will when he otherwise would have been eligible.

Consider this episode a clear snapshot of the difference between a league like the NFL in which team owners undisputably run the show and a “player power” league like the NBA.

6. The salary market for NFL running backs is at a low point compared to other position groups.

This relates directly to why the value of the 2023 franchise tender for running backs is just $10.091 million compared to $32.416 million for quarterbacks, $19.743 million for wide receivers, and $11.345 million for tight ends. This value is determined by averaging the top five salaries within that position group over the past five years, adjusting for changes in the NFL salary cap.

So, there’s a direct through-line we can draw from the bottom dropping out of the overall salary market for running backs to the franchise tag reinforcing the trend.

7. With that in mind, it’s hard to argue that the league’s best running backs are asking for the world here.

Or, as Jacobs put it:

8. Let’s conclude with four words: Todd Gurley’s Rams extension.

Ahead of the 2018 NFL season, the Los Angeles Rams inked Todd Gurley II to a four-year contract extension worth up to $60 million, including a healthy $45 million guaranteed. At the time, it was the largest contract for an NFL running back by both average annual value and guaranteed money. It was easy enough to justify — he had just won NFL Offensive Player of the Year, and he turned right around and helped his team make the Super Bowl in the deal’s very first season.

After injuries limited Gurley to just 3.8 yards per carry in 2019, the Rams released him halfway through his record-setting contract, preferring to eat just over $20 million in dead cap money merely to get him out the door.

Since Gurley signed that fateful deal, only one running back has received more guaranteed money:

  • The Cowboys extended Ezekiel Elliott in 2019 for six years and $90 million. Following his least-productive NFL season to date, Dallas released him earlier this year.

Over the same period, only Alvin Kamara (Saints), Elliott, and Christian McCaffrey (Panthers) have received bigger contracts by total value:

  • Kamara tied a career high with 13 starts in 2022, but missed the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career and recorded a career-low two rushing touchdowns
  • Injuries limited McCaffrey to just 10 regular season games over the first two years of his extension. In 2022, he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers.

The NFL’s Highest-paid RBs of 2023

Based on total cash compensation as noted by Spotrac.

1. Bijan Robinson (Falcons): $13,719,844

An unprecedented MLS arrival means an unprecedented compensation package — check out everything we know about Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi contract.

Lionel Messi was quite arguably the GOAT of the world’s most popular sport before he went and won the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Argentina. As his victory tour continued into 2023, however, he managed to find one last mountain to climb — one that he had spoken about for years but never found the right opportunity to take on.

On July 16, Lucky Leo reached the summit. After playing out his contract with Paris Saint-Germain and respectfully spurning a hail-mary overture from longtime club Barcelona, he was officially introduced as the newest signing for Inter Miami CF of Major League Soccer, completing a long-rumored relocation stateside for the backstretch of his career. No matter what was to happen next, it’s a singularly transformative moment for soccer in America

@boardroom_ Lionel Messi’s move to Miami might be just the first chess piece in futbol’s North American takeover, culminating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. #messi #intermiami #mls #lionelmessi #futbol #soccertiktok #fifa ♬ original sound – Boardroom

And with such an unprecedented arrival, there was always sure to be a head-turning compensation package to match. After all, when you’re the most famous, accomplished person ever to play in MLS, a hefty base salary alone isn’t enough — much like David Beckham before you, equity points and a sponsorship smorgasbord are joining the compensation party, too. (Along with an occasional unassuming jaunt over to Publix, where shopping is a pleasure.)

With that in mind, let’s examine all of the Lionel Messi contract and salary particulars that are currently known at Inter Miami.

The ever-prolific Nuk keeps rolling with brand-new home — check out the details behind the Titans’ DeAndre Hopkins contract.

DeAndre Hopkins has done quite a bit in his football career. He was a state champion at Daniel High School back home in South Carolina. During his college years at Clemson just down the road, he earned First Team All-SEC honors and helped lay the groundwork for what would become a championship tradition just a couple of short years later under Dabo Swinney. A first-round pick n the 2013 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans, “Nuk” has made five Pro Bowls as of this writing on the way to becoming not-so-sneakily one of football’s top all-time earners at the wide receiver position.

He found himself at a crossroads following the 2022 season, however, when the Arizona Cardinals said thanks-but-no-thanks just before the player’s two-year contract extension was set to begin. That meant a return to free agency earlier than expected.

Enter the Titans, who swooped picked the dog days of summer 2023 to ink the impressive playmaker to a two-year deal worth $26 million.

Let’s take a closer look at the numbers behind Tennessee’s DeAndre Hopkins contract.

Find out how much Paul Skenes, Wyatt Langford, Dylan Crews, and other top prospects stand to make in signing bonuses at this year’s MLB Draft.

Starting Sunday, July 9, the next generation of diamond dogs will realize their professional dreams with the arrival of the 2023 MLB Draft. And while LSU Tigers pitcher and newly minted national champion Paul Skenes is a virtual lock to go No. 1 overall to the Pittsburgh Pirates, there will be no instant anointment of superstardom on par with Victor Wembanyama or Bryce Young.

This is because baseball is really, really hard.

When an amateur enters the MLB pipeline, the biggest wad of dough coming his way takes the form not of base salary, but that sweet, sweet signing bonus. Since the draft is so long, the league keeps negotiations from becoming too protracted and arduous by keeping a cap on how much each team is able to spend on these bonuses, however, through MLB Draft slot values assigned to each pick in the event’s first 10 rounds.

In other words, we already have a solid estimate of how much top prospects like Skenes, LSU teammate Dylan Crews, Florida outfielder Wyatt Langford, and Wake Forest pitcher Rhett Lowder are due to make from their first big professional bag.

Let’s get into the numbers — check out the full list of 2023 MLB Draft slot values, pick-by-pick, as well as the pool for signing bonuses each club is working with.

MLB Draft Slot Values 2023: First Round

Salary data via MLB.com. Teams are able to offer above or below draft slot values at their discretion, but must pay a penalty if a signing within the first 10 rounds of the draft exceeds their total signing bonus allotment — scroll down to see each team’s bonus pool number.

Breakout Bags: The Underrated Legacy of the NBA Rookie Max Contract https://boardroom.tv/nba-rookie-max-contract-salary-cba/ Wed, 05 Jul 2023 19:57:07 +0000 https://boardroom.tv/?p=73351 The 25% rookie max has that curious ability to supercharge a baller’s career earnings trajectory while also curiously granting certain teams roster-building flexibility against the cap. The 25% rookie max has that curious ability to supercharge a baller’s career earnings trajectory while also curiously granting certain teams roster-building flexibility against the cap. Let’s explore.

At about this time seven years ago as the basketball world searched far and wide but ultimately in vain for JR Smith’s shirt, the talk of the NBA was the decision to allow the salary cap to skyrocket by 32% overnight. The reason was simple: a massive influx of revenue from the latest round of NBA media rights agreements. The fallout was immediate: The big spending Golden State Warriors were able to acquire my future boss and win the next two championships running away.

In 2017 — the very next year — a new collective bargaining agreement went into effect in the Association, ushering in the era of the designated veteran player exception, a contract colloquially known as the “supermax.” The rule allowed for players to sign extensions with their incumbent teams starting at a full 35% of the NBA salary cap following their seventh or eighth seasons if they met certain performance milestones. Since then, future Hall of Famers like Stephen Curry, Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Nikola Jokić have all inked this deal, setting new high watermarks for annual NBA earnings nearly every year.

But a less-heralded salary measure by comparison — one that long predates the 35% supermax — has had a massively greater impact on the hoops earnings landscape, and as the 2023 offseason period began, it reared its pretty little head once again to the tune of $828 million in salary commitments in fewer than 72 hours: the NBA rookie max contract, starting at 25% of the cap. It’s the first mega-extension a young baller is eligible to sign.

With four new members securing this lucrative deal this summer, there’s no better time to discuss the way the Breakout Bag has both supercharged several players’ career earnings trajectories while curiously giving several teams valuable flexibility to build up a contending core at the same time.

Not long after the 2023 free agency and extension floodgates opened at 6 p.m. ET on June 30, Indiana’s Tyrese Haliburton, the Grizzlies’ Desmond Bane, and Charlotte’s LaMelo Ball — all 2020 draftees with three years of service time in the books — signed a 25% NBA rookie max contract in their first year of eligibility, forgoing what would have been restricted free agency one year from now. Anthony Edwards of the Timberwolves joined them on July 3.

Starting in 2024-25, each stands to make $207 million over five years. For a sense of proportion, let’s establish that, as of this writing, these “Breakout Bag” contract extensions are:

  • Already tied for No. 12 on the list of biggest contracts in NBA history by total value
  • Approximately 35% larger than any LeBron James contract by total value and 6% larger than any Kevin Durant contract
  • Larger than the career NBA earnings of all but 23 active players and all but 35 players in the history of the league

I mean, sheesh. Not bad for a group of four young lads with a combined three All-Star appearances and zero All-NBA teams among them.

But what if I told you that, despite these seemingly gigantic numbers, these contracts will practically feel team-friendly even if this foursome never once reaches MVP heights or cracks the ranks of All-NBA?

Yes, sure, I’ll pause while you research new profanities to hurl at your screen like an 18th century shinobi hurls a shuriken. But the key here is that the Breakout Bag only begins at 25% of the salary cap; it isn’t pegged there year-over-year.

Another key? Just as we saw in 2016 when the Warriors collapsed in the NBA Finals only to turn around and sign Kevin Durant, a new (and gobsmackingly gigantic) NBA media rights deal will begin following the 2024-25 season — the very first in which these four players’ extensions are in effect — delivering a revenue spike to the league that’s highly expected to be unprecedented in nature.

As this moneyed media rights bonanza takes effect, the NBPA shouldn’t be considered a lock to approve an accompanying salary cap leap as massive and immediate as we saw seven years ago. But even if they opt for “cap smoothing” over a period of years, the longer-term effect is the same.

The collective bargaining agreement allows for a contract’s annual salary number to increase by a maximum of 8% year over year. With this in mind, an NBA rookie max contract extension that begins at 25% of the cap in 2024-25 could not just look team-friendly by the time it’s winding down and the player in question enters his expected prime, but could feel like a downright steal if it overlaps along the way with a notable salary cap spike since the value of the deal is only pegged to the cap in year one.

According to current estimates at Spotrac, the final year of the Haliburton-Bane-Ball-Edwards Breakout Bag comes with a salary number of about $46.86 million. Out of context, that feels like a gigantic figure; only Steph Curry made more in 2022-23. In the context of expected annual salary cap growth, however, $46.86 million is barely 22.5% of the estimated 2028-29 cap.

If an explosion of TV money shoots revenue outlooks even higher, a 25% extension could easily be down to 20% by its end. With each of these four players in question already showcasing All-Star-quality production, particularly on the offensive end of the floor, accounting for just 20% of team spending allotment is a steal.

And besides, even in a worst-case scenario, an expiring contract of that size is a readily tradable asset that likely wouldn’t require a team to give up notable draft assets for the sake of a salary dump.

Under current rules, the Breakout Bag is the largest contract for an NBA player with six seasons of experience or fewer. And while certain styles of play may not deliver the same bang for one’s buck as the hot-scoring Ant Man or Bane — streaky turnover artists or big men lacking reliable outside shooting or shot creation ability, for instance — putting a ceiling on the extent of a team’s investment in a young star can end up being a bit of brilliant business if the timing works out just right.

A Parting Word on Derrick Rose

Derrick Rose won his MVP award too early. Just 21 when the gaudy trophy was bestowed upon him in 2011, he was condemned to become the most underpaid MVP in the modern history of the league. The NBA and NBPA quickly got to work on an exception that would permit players still on rookie deals to sign extensions starting at 30% of the cap rather than 25%, a wrinkle now colloquially known as the Derrick Rose Rule.

Here’s how it affects the Breakout Bag: If either of the four players in question makes an All-NBA team, wins MVP, or wins Defensive Player of the Year in 2023-24 — the final year of their rookie deals — that $207 million rookie max contract automatically escalates into a $260 million “Rose Rule” deal.

Would that change how a team perceives the value of its investment? Sure, but don’t overthink it: it also means they have a legit superstar.

Forget that $260 million would be, as of this writing, the second-biggest contract in NBA history behind only Denver’s favorite Joker — an eruption of TV money is an eruption of TV money, and its effect on the league salary cap is going to make anyone signing an extension this offseason a bizarrely-but-explicably undervalued asset in a few short years.

One of LA’s most pleasant surprises turned a spirited run into a life-changing bag — check out the numbers behind the Lakers’ Austin Reaves contract.

Facing the real possibility of missing the postseason in 2022-23, GM Rob Pelinka and the Los Angeles Lakers were aggressive ahead of the NBA trade deadline, adding pieces like D’Angelo Russell and Rui Hachimura to help the team move the needle and put itself back into position for a postseason run.

As the games started to matter more, however, one of the most intriguing wild cards for the Lake Show turned out not to be a new acquisition, but an unsung Oklahoma Sooner who first showed up in the fall of 2021 as a rookie on a humble two-way contract. An efficient shooter whose minute-for-minute contributions to all corners of the stat sheet strongly belie his status as an undrafted player, the Arkansas-born two-guard has gradually become more than simply a fan favorite at Crypto.com Arena.

Given the modest nature of his entry into the NBA, his contributions come at an attractively low cost to Jeanie Buss and Co., and it makes the extension he signed in July of 2023 all the sweeter.

With that in mind, take a closer look at the numbers behind the Lakers’ Austin Reaves contract.

If your goal is to secure open jumpers, there’s nothing quite like playing with LeBron James and Anthony Davis, whose collective gravity resembles that of a supermassive black hole at the center of a galaxy. Reaves hasn’t fumbled the opportunity, making 52% of his field goals and 38.3% from downtown during the 2022-23 regular season — the kind of efficiency that gets you paid in this league.

When he reaches restricted free agency this summer, the Lakers will reserve the right to match any outside offer sheet from a rival team in order to keep Reaves around.

Not a bad career arc so far from a kid who started just 11 games in two seasons for Wichita State before packing his bags for Norman.

Find out how much money Victor Wembanyama, Scoot Henderson, and the stars of the 2023 NBA Draft stand to make on their rookie contracts.

Thursday, June 22 marks the first day in which 58 hoopers get to call themselves NBA players for the very first time — and though it’s already a foregone conclusion that French phenom Victor Wembanyama is headed to the San Antonio Spurs at No. 1 overall, he won’t actually be considered an active member of Gregg Popovich’s roster until he signs his first contract.

Last year, No. 1 overall pick Paolo Banchero received a four-year deal worth $50.16 million from the Orlando Magic, with his salary scheduled to reach as high as $15.33 million in 2025-26. So, what do next season’s rookie scale salary rules mean for Wemby, Scoot Henderson, Brandon Miller, Amen and Ausar Thompson, and the rising crop of rookies headed to the Association?

Below, check out the complete estimated NBA Draft pick salaries overview for the 30 picks making up the first round — and be sure to read the fine print, as players and their agents do have some room to negotiate.

Estimated NBA Draft Pick Salaries 2023

Salary data via RealGM. The NBA collective bargaining agreement allows players selected in the first round to negotiate salaries up to 20% higher than the standard rookie scale as listed for their draft position — for the No. 1 pick, that means a 2023-24 salary as high as $11.98 million.

The Notre Dame product has been one of the faces of the Wings franchise since she was drafted in 2019. Here’s a look at the Arike Ogunbowale supermax contract in Dallas.

When you have a bona fide All-Star on your team, you’d be well served to keep them around as long as possible. That’s why the Dallas Wings chose to lock up Arike Ogunbowale a year ago, signing her to a supermax contract that begins this season.

Ogunbowale has excelled in the WNBA, seemingly from the moment she first put on a Dallas jersey. She went from WNBA All-Rookie in 2019 to All-WNBA First Team in 2020 and hasn’t looked back as a consistent 20-point-per-game scorer.

Unfortunately for Ogunbowale, her rookie scale contract didn’t exactly compensate her in a way proportional to her worth. First signed under the previous CBA, when starting salaries were much lower, she made just $49,539 in her first season and $72,141 last year. But Dallas is committed to its young star and made sure to make her one of the highest-paid players in the game last February when the team signed her to her current extension, more than tripling her salary from 2022 to 2023.

With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at the Dallas Wings’ contract with Arike Ogunbowale.

Arike Ogunbowale Contract Details

Years: 3
2023 Salary: $234,946
Average Annual Salary: $241,984
Total Contract Value: $725,952
Free Agency: 2026

As the proud owner of a supermax contract, Ogunbowale earns as much as anybody in the WNBA. Diana Taurasi and Jewell Loyd are the only other two players in the league to have such a deal, making Ogunbowale the youngest of the three.

With Satou Sabally and Natasha Howard by her side, Ogunbowale is in position to help lead an improving Dallas team back to WNBA relevance. The Wings have not won a postseason series since relocating to Dallas in 2016, but the franchise now has the core to change that.

She’s the catalyst to the offense for that superteam in Brooklyn. Boardroom jumps into the details of the Courtney Vandersloot contract with the New York Liberty.

As Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones joined Sabrina Ionescu in Brooklyn over the offseason, it was easy to forget that the New York Liberty also signed one of the best point guards in the game.

And so far in 2023, Courtney Vandersloot has been worth every dollar New York spent to bring her in. The Gonzaga product is the catalyst to the Liberty’s high-powered offense, able to score when needed or distribute with the best in the game.

But at a time when WNBA teams can’t throw money around willy-nilly, New York has had to get creative to fit all these superstars onto one roster. Sloot took a pay cut to come to New York, signing for two years at a discount compared to what she was making with the Chicago Sky. The hope will be that it ultimately results in even more money for her and her teammates, as New York has a real shot at the Commissioner’s Cup (and the $750,000 prize pool that comes with it) and a WNBA championship (and the $11,356 per player payout the CBA guarantees to the winning team).

With that in mind, Boardroom dives into the particulars of the Courtney Vandersloot contract with the New York Liberty.

Courtney Vandersloot Contract Details

All figures courtesy of Spotrac.

Years: 2
2023 Salary: $189,000
2024 Salary: $194,670
Free Agency: 2025

For the non-mathematicians out there, Sloot will make an average of $191,835 over the two years she’s under contract. By the time her deal is up, she’ll be 36, but if the recent history of great point guards is any indication, she could still have plenty left in the tank.

Also, keep in mind that the year after her contract expires (2025), WNBA players will have the option to opt out of the current CBA, which they will likely do. That means future contracts could be far more lucrative. In the meantime, expect to see plenty of short-term deals as players stay flexible for what’s to come.

From Nikola Jokić and Jamal Murray to Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, and beyond, find out who’s taking home the biggest bag from this year’s Nuggets-Heat NBA Finals series.

Last summer, Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokić signed the largest contract in NBA history, a supermax deal worth over $270 million. He quickly made good on the historic investment, helping his team to its first-ever NBA Finals.

But what if I told you that the Joker is not earning the No. 1 largest salary on the books in this bang-bang series between his Nuggets and the boisterous, throw-the-odds-out-the-window Miami Heat? A closer look at the numbers reveals that Jokić’s famous deal doesn’t actually kick in until 2023-24, meaning that he has to settle for the series’ No. 2 salary number as things stand.

So, here and now for NBA Finals 2023, who are the highest-paid players between the Nuggets and Heat, and who leads the pack? Boardroom has your full rundown below, as well as the finer contract details for the biggest names in the series.

From Crosby to Ovechkin to Jagr and beyond, who are the highest-paid NHL players ever? You have salary and earnings questions, Boardroom has answers.

There’s truly no greater figure on two skates than Wayne Gretzky, and there never will be. But would you believe that the Canadian legend simply known as the Great One isn’t even among the top 100 salary earners in NHL history?

Sure, the man perhaps known more the Generation Z as Dustin Johnson’s father-in-law has made exponentially more as a businessman, team executive, and media figure since retiring in 1999, but it’s a bit gobsmacking to think about. Looking deeper, that got us thinking in a different direction — who does top the list of the NHL’s highest-paid players ever?

Whether you’re ride-or-die with Sidney Crosby, worship at the altar of Alex Ovechkin, or can’t quit the eternal majesty of Zdeno Chara, we have all the puck-tastic numbers you desire — check out Boardroom’s master list of highest-paid NHL players of all time.

From Crosby and Ovechkin to McDavid and MacKinnon and beyond, Boardroom rounds up the fattest hockey salaries ever handed out in the long history of NHL contracts.

In the NBA, where they throw money around like rice at a wedding, contracts among the elite tier of athletes don’t exceed five years under the league’s current collective bargaining agreement. On the other side of the fence in the National Hockey League, the income ceiling is admittedly lower.

The overall job security, however, tends to be a lot higher, with contract extensions routinely hitting eight years. In fact, in 2010, Ilya Kovalchuk signed a 15-year deal with the New Jersey Devils that would still be in effect today if he hadn’t (1) left during the 2012-13 NHL lockout play in his native Russia for several years and (2) retired from the game entirely in 2021.

(Fun fact: Kovalchuk originally agreed to 17 years and $102 million with the Devils before the NHL stepped in and cried foul over alleged salary cap circumvention.)

With all this in mind, that got us thinking: Who owns the single largest deal in the NHL all time?

Below, let’s round up the biggest contracts in NHL history — starting with an indomitable Russian man who also doubles as the No. highest career earner the game has seen.

After injury derailed the hot start to his career, MPJ is back and thriving in the Mile High City — check out the details behind the Denver Nuggets’ Michael Porter Jr. contract.

An all-world prospect out of Seattle by way of Columbia, Missouri, Michael Porter Jr.’s rise through the prep ranks felt like a story of foregone conclusions. His father, MPJ Sr., accompanied his journey to the Pacific Northwest, joining the coaching staff at the University of Washington. After Huskies boss Lorenzo Romar got the sack, however, the elder Porter found himself catching on right back home with the Missouri Tigers.

His son, the 5-star jewel of college basketball’s 2017 recruiting cycle, would follow — only for his seemingly inevitable ascent to be derailed by a back injury that saw him fall to 14th overall in the 2018 NBA Draft and miss the entirety of what should have been his rookie season with the Denver Nuggets. After finally emerging as an impact starter in 2020-21, a third back surgery cut his following season short. Michael Malone’s team had seen enough of the rangy forward’s sky-high potential, however, to offer him a 25% rookie max extension worth $179.3 million over five years.

These days, MPJ is a matchup nightmare whose salary number could come to look awfully affordable if he can fully own the persona of Denver’s third star alongside Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray.

With that in mind, check out the finer details behind the Nuggets’ Michael Porter Jr. contract extension.

The 2023 WNBA salary cap is $1,420,500, but understanding exactly how it all works is more complicated than just one number — Boardroom has you covered.

Two things can be true at the same time:

  • WNBA players are making more money than ever before
  • It is more difficult than ever before for teams to pay their stars as much as the league will allow

Such is life when you play in a league with a salary cap that has not increased at the same rate as player wages. To be fair, the league has taken steps to offset this, namely giving players additional opportunities to earn money outside of their base on-court salary. That includes a Commissioner’s Cup with a $750,000 prize pool, additional marketing opportunities, and a bonus structure that rewards success.

It’s easy to look at any number of players in this league and decide they deserve to make the true maximum WNBA salary ($234,936 in 2023). What’s more complicated, however, is figuring out how to make it happen while still fielding a competitive team around those players.

With that in mind, as the W returns for a new season on May 19, here’s everything you need to know about WNBA salaries and the salary cap in 2023.

2023 WNBA Minumum Salary and Supermax

Per the league’s collective bargaining agreement, WNBA players with less than three years of experience cannot earn less than $62,285 in 2023, representing the league minimum. For players with three or more years of experience, that number jumps to $74,305.

As for max contracts, salary structure for 2023 exists in two tiers:

  • A “supermax” of $234,936 for veterans that meet special criteria
    • Three players are earning this salary in 2023: Jewell Loyd (Seattle), Arike Ogunbowale (Dallas), and Diana Taurasi (Phoenix)
  • A regular max of $202,154 for everyone else
    • Three players are earning this salary in 2023: Napheesa Collier (Minnesota), Erica Wheeler (Indiana), and A’ja Wilson (Las Vegas)

In every year of the current CBA, both the minimum and maximum increase to account for inflation.

For comparison’s sake, in 2019, the year before the current CBA went into effect, the league minimum was just $41,965 and the max was $117,500.

Inside the WNBA Salary Cap for 2023

The salary cap situation in the WNBA is a little complicated, but understanding its structure will go a long way toward understanding why such a drastic increase in player salaries isn’t quite as impressive as it seems at first glance.

First, the most basic numbers: The 2023 WNBA salary cap will be $1,420,500. That’s up from $1,300,000 in 2020, the first year of the current CBA, and up from $996,100 in 2019, the last year of the prior agreement.

But that’s not the only number to look at. There is also a minimum team salary and guarantee level.

Minimum Team Salary: This one is pretty self-explanatory. Set at $1,188,990 for 2023, this is the total team salary number that teams must hit by the end of the season. If they fail to reach that mark, the team will owe the difference to its players, either handed out as a proportion of players’ base salaries or by another formula as determined by the Players’ Association.

Guarantee Level: How is that $1,188,990 minimum determined? Glad you asked. That is 90% of what the W calls the guarantee level, which is $1,321,100 in 2023. The guarantee level represents the average amount that each team must spend this season. If the league does not meet this average, then all players in the league will get a cut of the shortfall.

Crunching the Numbers

The idea of minimums that teams must pay is great news for the players, but it does come with a downside. Compared to the previous CBA, the minimum and maximum salaries for individual players are now a larger percentage over the overall cap. Just look at 2019 (the last year of the prior CBA), 2020 (the first year of this one), and 2023:

2019:

Cap: $996,100
Min: $41,965 (4.2% of cap)
Max: $117,500 (11.8% of cap)

2020:

Cap: $1,300,000
Min: $57,000 (4.4%)
Max: $215,000 (16.5%)

2023:

Cap:  $1,420,500
Min: $62,285 (4.4%)
Max: $234,936 (16.5%)

The minimum salary as 4.4% of the cap is only a modest bump from before, so that’s not the real issue here. The maximum, however, is now 16.5% of the cap, compared to 11.8% previously. That means teams can go all-out and spend on a few players, but their payroll flexibility after that is going to be more limited than it was before. Had the max salary remained $234,936 and 11.8% of the cap, then this year’s cap would be $1,990,983 — more than enough for each team to sign two more players to max deals.

It’s how we’ve ended up in a situation where a league already with too few roster spots chooses not to fill every last one of them.

To further aggravate matters, WNBA coaches even admit that they don’t necessarily field the best possible roster in terms of talent — and that’s because of the salary cap. As Los Angeles Sparks coach Curt Miller said last year when he was coaching the Connecticut Sun, “What the general public forgets at times, it’s not always about the best 11 players, it’s the best 11 players that fit under your salary cap.”

Notice he said 11, not 12, which is the intended size of a full roster. Becky Hammon’s star-studded Las Vegas Aces are one such team that will start with 11 players this season.

Those 11 will combine to make $1,420,016 this season, which is within $500 of the current cap. Rather than carrying a 12th player, the Aces have built a star-studded team at the top, led by Wilson ($202,155), Kelsey Plum ($200,000), and Chelsea Gray ($196,267).

We’re still waiting for all 12 teams to announce their rosters, but we already know that there will be fewer than 144 total players listed — after all, the cap is the cap.

The former No. 1 overall pick followed her first WNBA All-Star selection with a spiffy new deal — let’s take a closer look at the Liberty’s Sabrina Ionescu contract extension details.

The 2022 and ’23 iterations of the New York Liberty were never going to resemble one another precisely, but the sheer amount of work GM Jonathan Kolb put in this offseason to enhance one of the WNBA’s founding franchises proved to be eye-popping. Major MVP-level acquisitions like Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones quickly made the team more than just a trendy championship pick, but a busy offseason on the trade market and in free agency was far from the only big women’s hoops news making waves in the Five Boroughs.

On May 15, just four days before the 2023 WNBA season was due to tip off, the Liberty confirmed that superstar point guard and 2020 No. 1 overall pick Sabrina Ionescu had agreed to terms on a contract extension.

As reported by insider Richard Cohen, the deal is worth $410,060 over two years. The extension kicks in beginning with the 2024 season after Ionescu plays out the final year of her rookie scale contract worth a total of $300,358 over four seasons.

So, now that the former Oregon Ducks phenom is locked in through her age-26 season, what do the finer financial details really look like? Let’s take a closer look at the New York Liberty’s Sabrina Ionescu contract extension.

Sabrina Ionescu Contract & Salary Details

Rookie contract data via Spotrac; extension numbers as reported by Richard Cohen.

Rookie contract (through 2023)

Length: 4 years
Total value: $300,358
Average annual value: $75,089.50

2023 salary: $86,701

Contract extension (begins 2024)

Length: 2 years
Total value: $410,060
Average annual value: $205,030
Free agency: 2026

Annual contract extension salary numbers

2024: $202,000
2025: $208,060

The deal constitutes a significant pay raise for the Liberty baller, but as several observers have noted, it falls short of a regular max deal ($422,685 total over two years over the same time period), as well as a “supermax” contract ($491,228 total) available to certain players re-signing with their incumbent teams.

Perhaps that’s just the price of building a superteam — but If there is indeed a championship on the horizon for the fully loaded Liberty, expect that the long-term payoffs both on and off the court will more than simply make up for a five-figure discrepancy.

The WNBA offseason period ahead of the 2023 campaign officially tipped off on Feb. 1, and folks, the super-team-ification of women’s hoops appears to be playing out before our very eyes with the kind of swiftness that would make Barry Allen jealous.

Indeed, if you’re willing to put money on a futures bet in the W this season involving a team that isn’t the Las Vegas Aces or New York Liberty, well… vaya con dios. Such is the way things are heading into the new season, which tips off on May 19.

But before we explore just how these two teams and their 10 rivals have managed to navigate the offseason period dollar for dollar, it’s time to find out what’s new with the WNBA salary cap this season regarding max contracts, salary floors, rookie scale, and more as determined by the league’s collective bargaining agreement:

The former No. 1 overall pick found a fresh start (and a championship ring) in the Bay — take a closer look at the numbers behind the Warriors’ Andrew Wiggins contract.

It will eventually grow into one of those sneaky-good sports trivia questions: Which NBA team drafted Andrew Wiggins No. 1 overall 2014?

It’s easy to misremember the Minnesota Timberwolves — and not the Cleveland Cavaliers — as the team in question. Of course, these were the early days of LeBron James’ triumphant return to Cleveland, and he wasn’t about to spend the rest of the tippy-top of his athletic prime bringing along a young pup. Rather, the Cavaliers used the prized Kansas Jayhawk to bring in All-Star forward Kevin Love from the Twin Cities. Love won a championship with LeBron in 2016 as part of four straight NBA Finals appearances; Wiggins, meanwhile, struggled to develop into a premier performer alongside Karl-Anthony Towns and a revolving door of head coaches.

Then, another trade rolled around. Just before COVID lockdowns forced the NBA into its Orlando bubble for the business end of the 2019-20 season, Wiggins became the newest member of the Golden State Warriors.

Just two seasons later, he’d make his first All-Star team and win his first championship ring. That meant not just catharsis, but a spiffy new extension to the tune of four years and $109 million.

With that in mind, check out the finer details behind the Warriors’ expiring Andrew Wiggins contract, his subsequent four-year extension, and his career earnings to date in the NBA.

Andrew Wiggins Contract Details & Salary

All dollar figures via Spotrac.

Current contract (through 2022-23)

Years: 5
Total value: $146,500,000
Average annual value: $29,300,000

Remaining salary under current deal:

2022-23: $32,600,060

Upcoming extension (begins 2023-24)

Years: 4 (fourth year is player option)
Total value: $109,000,000
Average annual value: $27,250,000
Free agency: 2026 or 2027

Annual contract extension salary numbers:

2023-24: $24,330,357
2024-25: $26,276,786
2025-26: $28,223,215
2026-27 player option: $30,169,644

Interestingly enough, Wiggins’ first NBA extension — a five-year deal signed with Minnesota and concluding in 2022-23 — is larger by total value, average annual value, and percentage of the salary cap than his fresh Warriors extension that kicks in starting in 2023-24. Call it the Larry O’Brien discount, as “Maple Jordan” wouldn’t have whiffed anything close to a championship in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

All told, Golden State’s financial commitments to Wiggins put him on track to reach or exceed $300 million in career on-court earnings by the time his age-32 season rolls around.

Not a bad career arc for a guy who was considered a potentially historic bust just a few short years ago.
