Kobe Bryant’s 2000 Lakers Title Ring Sets Auction Record

A 2000 NBA Finals championship ring Kobe Bryant gifted to his father, Joe “Jellybean” Bryant, has sold for $927,000 at an auction. The sale was hosted by Goldin Auctions and now becomes the highest amount ever paid for an NBA championship ring. That amount breaks the record set by Bill Russell’s 1957 championship ring, which sold for $705,000 in 2021. According to Hypebeast, the ring is made of 14-karat gold and contains 40 diamonds, along with the Los Angeles Lakers logo and “World Champions” on the front. The identity of the buyer was not revealed.

It is also the first time a country album holds the title this year, Spotify added. Amazon Music also shared on Instagram that Cowboy Carter recorded the most first-day streams of any country album by a female artist and had more global first-day streams than any of Beyoncé‘s previous records, making it her biggest debut to date on Amazon Music. The deal puts an enterprise value of $4.5 billion on the firm. Expected to be complete by the end of 2024, the agreement means Liberty Media will acquire roughly 86% of Dorna, with Dorna management retaining around 14% of its equity. “MotoGP is a global league with a loyal, enthusiastic fan base, captivating racing, and a highly cash flow generative financial profile,” said Greg Maffei, Liberty Media’s President and CEO. “The business has significant upside, and we intend to grow the sport for MotoGP fans, teams, commercial partners, and our shareholders.”

The remake of the 1989 film of the same name starring Jake GyllenhaalDaniela Melchior, and Conor McGregor, among others, brought in over 50 million viewers worldwide over its first two weekends, becoming Amazon MGM Studios’ most-watched produced film debut ever on a worldwide basis. “The groundbreaking, successful debut of ‘Road House’ is a testament to the hard work and commitment from the entire Road House filmmaking team and the film’s cast led by the phenomenal Jake Gyllenhaal,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios. “It’s great to see the film taking off with both fans of the iconic original as well as a huge turnout from new audiences. Brock Purdy Nearly Doubles Salary with Performance-based Pay

Brock Purdy may not have led the San Franciso 49ers to a Super Bowl win this year, but the quarterback still earned a hefty bonus due to his efforts. The NFL announced its annual performance-based pay distribution on Monday, showing that Purdy took home an additional $739,795 on top of his regular salary. For context, the two-year starter’s contract is $3.737 million over four years, making Purdy’s base salary last season just $870,000. For the 2023 season, the NFL dispersed an additional $393.8 million in performance-based pay to players. The pay program compensates athletes with lower salaries who get a lot of playing time. In the 16 games Purdy started for San Franciso last season, he set the franchise’s single-season passing yards record and earned his first Pro Bowl nomination.

After featuring panelists such as Nick Kyrgios, Paolo Banchero, Jessica Berman, and David Blitzer in the inaugural event, CNBC & Boardroom look to level up this year.

Following the massive success of last year’s inaugural event, the CNBC x Boardroom Game Plan Summit will return for a second year, the companies announced Tuesday. The one-day expo, which brings together industry leaders, visionaries, and playmakers from sports and entertainment, is scheduled for Sept. 10 in Los Angeles, Calif. This will be the first of a new multi-year partnership between the two companies.

“Last year’s Game Plan event brought together a mix of incredible athletes and innovators for a day of conversation unlike anything I’ve experienced in my professional career,” said Rich Kleiman, CEO of Boardroom. “The whole Boardroom team is really excited to run it back with CNBC as part of a multi-year partnership and grow the foundation we’ve built together with the sports and business community.”

In 2023, the sold-out event featured panels centered on everything from the future of athlete brand-building to conversations on the big business of live sports. Select speakers included:

  • ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro
  • NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman
  • NJ Devils & Philadelphia 76ers Co-owner David Blitzer
  • Tennis star Nick Kyrgios
  • Colorado Rockies Co-owner Linda Alvarado
  • 2023 NBA Rookie of the Year Paolo Banchero
  • WNBA Player Lexie Brown
  • Kroenke Sports & Entertainment CEO and Los Angeles Rams Owner E. Stanley Kroenke

The afternoon ended with a conversation between Boardroom Co-founder Kevin Durant and CNBC’s Squawk Box co-anchor Andrew Ross Sorkin.

Throughout the inaugural event’s programming, there were many thought-provoking segments on the aforementioned range of topics. From KD advocating for cannabis to be removed from the NBA’s banned substance list to Kroenke calling SoFi the best venue in sports to Lexie Brown singing the praises of Athletes Unlimited, the first CNBC x Boardroom Game Plan covered it all.

For this year’s event, both CNBC and Boardroom are ready to take the summit to a new level.

“We head in to Game Plan 2024 with significant momentum,” said Nick Dunn, Senior Vice President & Managing Director of CNBC Events. “The buzz from last year was not only about the unparalleled programming, but also the amazing attendees; an influential mix of owners, executives, investors and innovators all connecting and networking at the event. Any real player in this space will want to be in the room this year.”

Panelists and speakers for the second CNBC x Boardroom Game Plan will be announced in the coming weeks. In the meantime, be sure to stay up to date on changes and ticket information here.

Nike Goes Back to School with Bronny James USC Jerseys

We are still a few months out from Bronny James‘ official on-court debut as a USC Trojan. However, Nike is ensuring that fans are on the ready. The Beaverton brand unveiled some official Bronny USC merch for the first time. The Swoosh listed a classic t-shirt in the signature cardinal and gold and featuring the number 6. However, fans rushed the site, leading it to sell out soon after its release. James is only the second college athlete to receive the official Nike scholarly treatment, following in the footsteps of Iowa’s Caitlin Clark. James will step on the court for his freshman year after he experienced a cardiac event while practicing earlier this summer.

Nicki Minaj Tapped to Emcee the MTV VMAs

Nicki Minaj is set to drop Pink Friday 2her first album since 2010’s Queen, in November. And in advance, she is getting back in the game. MTV revealed that the rapper will take the stage in a dual role at next Tuesday’s Video Music Awards, where she will serve both as the evening’s emcee and a performer. This is the second year in a row that Minaj will assume hosting duties (although MTV’s announcement seemingly avoids the term), having shared them last year with LL Cool J and Jack Harlow.

Deion Sanders, Colorado Football Drawing Huge Betting Numbers Ahead of Week 2

After a shocking Week 1 win against the TCU Horned Frogs, all eyes are on Deion Sanders and the Colorado squad as they take on Nebraska. In advance of Saturday’s kickoff, bettors are locking in on the game. ESPN reports that the matchup has taken in more bets than any NFL game on the league’s opening weekend. A deeper look at the data provided by FanDuel reveals that the Buffs have received 37% of Saturday’s handle. This weekend, the team will sport custom suits from Michael Strahan‘s signature line. The threads, co-designed by Coach Prime, feature the school’s mascot and “IBELIEVE” lining.

CEO of the Recording Academy Debunks News that AI-Generated Drake & The Weeknd Cut is Grammy Eligible

The CEO of The Recording Academy, Harvey Mason Jr., took to Instagram to debunk the internet rumor that the AI-generated cut assembled in the style of Drake and The Weeknd will receive Grammy Award consideration. Ghostwriter977’s “Heart on My Sleeve” took over social media upon its release. Drake repeatedly spoke out against AI in music, and it appears that The Recording Academy is aligned with his criticism.  “Let me be extra, extra clear,” Mason Jr. said in a short video, “even though it was written by a human creator, the vocals were not legally obtained, the vocals were not cleared by the label or the artists and the song is not commercially available and because of that, it’s not eligible.” He went on to address that AI in music is a tricky subject with which the Recording Academy is currently grappling.

Oregon St. & Washington St. File Complaint Against Pac-12

Oregon State and Washington State, the only two schools committed to the Pac-12 beyond this school year, have filed a legal complaint against the conference in an effort to keep departing members from determining the league’s fate. WSU and OSU argue that conference bylaws state the 10 departing schools should not be allowed seats on the league’s board of directors. That would deny the outgoing schools the right to vote on matters including the potential dissolution of the conference and equal division of assets among the 12 schools. This comes ahead of a Sept. 13 meeting in which the league is scheduled to vote on a “go forward governance approach.” All 12 member schools are invited.

As we gear up for CNBC x Boardroom’s Game Plan conference this summer, let’s learn more about one of the event’s featured speakers, Stuart Duguid.

In a first-of-its-kind partnership, CNBC, First in Business Worldwide, and Boardroom, Kevin Durant and Rich Kleiman’s premier media brand covering the business of sports, music, and entertainment, are teaming up to produce CNBC x Boardroom’s Game Plan, an all-new, high-powered event taking place on July 25 in Los Angeles. Today, we’re highlighting featured speaker Stuart Duguid, founder of EVOLVE. Click here to view the full list of Game Plan speakers.

Stuart Duguid believes that the elitist days of tennis are behind us. Over the course of the last decade, he has served alongside some of the most iconic talents in the sport. As he and his clients have grown together in the game, Duguid has come to understand how all of the systems surrounding it evolve to meet the needs of the modern athlete.

Amid his top-tier talent, none has made an impact quite like his partnership with four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka. Throughout her tenure in the sport, Osaka has pushed the narrative of being a professional athlete. Over the course of time, she has championed the importance of mental and physical health as the cornerstones of her success.

In 2022, the two combined — along with Carly Duguid — to launch the EVOLVE Agency, which centers on the holistic wellness of its clients and allows them to call the shots. Since its inception, EVOLVE has teamed up with 2023 Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur and the wildly talented Nick Kyrgios.

Earlier this year, she told Boardroom that she began preparing for the position back when she was playing behind Hope Solo in the cage for the USWNT.

“I started building out a brand and how you present yourself, the things you say and what you represent, like what’s your stance in the world was like a really big part of who I wanted to be moving forward,” Harris recalled.

Quickly, she became widely known for her ferocious play on the field and her key role in the fight for equal pay, her enviable fashion, and her active championing for the LGBTQIA+ community off the field. As she transitions in to the next chapter of her career, Harris is committed to helping elevate the game of women’s soccer, while mentoring the next generation of players.

As we gear up for CNBC x Boardroom’s Game Plan conference this summer, let’s learn more about one of the event’s featured speakers, sports agent Jessica Holtz Steinberg.

In a first-of-its-kind partnership, CNBC, First in Business Worldwide, and Boardroom, Kevin Durant and Rich Kleiman’s premier media brand covering the business of sports, music, and entertainment, are teaming up to produce CNBC x Boardroom Game Plan, an all-new, high-powered event taking place on July 25 in Los Angeles. Today, we’re highlighting featured speaker Jessica Holtz Steinberg, Co-head of Basketball at CAA. Click here to view the full list of CNBC x Boardroom Game Plan speakers.

Behind every successful athlete is a whole team dedicated to helping them earn a contract that matches their worth, elevate their popularity, and position them within reach of even bigger and better opportunities. To the average fan, the name Jessica Holtz Steinberg might not be of the household variety, but to some of the NBA’s most talented hoopers, she’s an agent with an uncommonly compelling blueprint for success that captures imaginations — and cashes checks.

As the Co-head of Basketball at CAA, Holtz directly represents Phoenix Suns star Devin Booker and Karl-Anthony Towns of the Minnesota Timberwolves, making history in 2022 when she helped them both secure “supermax” contract extensions. She has additionally worked with Chris Paul, D’Angelo Russell, Paul George, and Mike Conley.

Prior to her tenure with CAA, Holtz was the Senior Director of Marketing at Excel Sports Management and served in an entertainment and marketing role with the NBA.

“It’s not just professional sports. It’s a lot of boardrooms and a lot of power positions across a lot of industries that are traditionally male-dominated,” Holtz said to Boardroom’s Shlomo Sprung in 2021 about being a commanding force in a role usually attributed to men. “And I think that the reason we’re having this conversation right now is because I am doing something different. And we just need more people to do different things, and for more younger females to aspire to roles that are traditionally male-dominated.”

As we gear up for Boardroom and CNBC’s Game Plan conference this summer, let’s learn more about one of the event’s featured speakers, co-founder of 35V and decorated NBA player Kevin Durant.

In a first-of-its-kind partnership, CNBC, First in Business Worldwide, and Boardroom, Kevin Durant and Rich Kleiman’s premier media brand covering the business of sports, music, and entertainment, are teaming up to produce Game Plan, an all-new, high-powered event taking place on July 25 in Los Angeles. Today, we’re highlighting Durant himself, one of the event’s featured speakers. Click here to view the full list of Game Plan speakers.

Few athletes get to be serious contenders for a spot on their era’s Mount Rushmore, but by the time his playing days are over, Kevin Durant will have a compelling case to state.

The Phoenix Suns forward certainly has the accolades to prove it through his raw box score stats alone — 27.3 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game for his career — but if you need more convincing, he’s also a 13-time NBA All-Star, four-time scoring champion, two-time NBA champion, two-time Finals MVP, and the 2014 league MVP. In this most recent NBA season, KD moved up to 13th on the league’s all-time scoring list, surpassing Oscar Robertson.

Off the hardwood, Durant is the co-founder of 35V alongside business partner Rich Kleiman. Founded in 2016, 35V incorporates the duo’s business entities across sports, tech, media, philanthropy, and more. 35V’s portfolio and purview includes:

  • Boardroom, the media network whose website you’re reading right now at the intersection of sports, business, and entertainment and the home of KD’s show, “The ETCs.”
  • Ownership stakes in emerging teams and sports properties including NWSL club NJ/NY Gotham FC, Philadelphia Union of MLS, League One Volleyball, Athletes Unlimited, the Premier Lacrosse League, and Major League Pickleball’s Brooklyn Aces
  • Film and TV projects including the Academy Award-winning short film Two Distant Strangers, the critically acclaimed Apple TV+ drama series Swagger, and Showtime documentary films NYC Point Gods and Basketball County: In the Water
  • The Durant Family Foundation, which boasts signature initiatives like Build It and They Will Ball, a global basketball court renovation project with 28 courts completed to date, as well as the Durant Center, a 10-year, $10 million program in partnership with College Track that helps low-income and underserved students enroll in and graduate from college. Durant received the season-long NBA Cares Community Assist and ESPN Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian awards in 2018.

As we gear up for CNBC x Boardroom’s Game Plan conference this summer, let’s learn more about one of the event’s featured speakers, Premier Lacrosse League co-founder Paul Rabil.

Today, we’re highlighting featured speaker Paul Rabil, retired lacrosse star, entrepreneur, and Premier Lacrosse League co-founder. Click here to view the full list of CNBC x Boardroom Game Plan speakers.

Paul Rabil didn’t just fight off legions of opposing players and teams as a high school and college lacrosse champion en route to becoming one the greats of the sport at the professional level — as a sports entrepreneur, he fought off lawsuits, financial strain, and a chorus of skeptics on the way to co-founding the Premier Lacrosse League alongside his brother, Mike.

As captured in the ESPN “30 for 30” documentary Fate of a Sport, Rabil’s second act as a lacrosse mogul actually began when he was still fully active as a player. He had already logged nearly 400 professional games between Major League Lacrosse and the National Lacrosse League through 2018, but his dream was to create something new that brought both greater athlete compensation and a more visible platform to help the game he loved earn a bigger audience.

On June 1, 2019, the dream came true when the PLL played its very first game. The very next year, it negotiated a merger with Major League Lacrosse. In 2022 — a year that marked Rabil’s final season as a player — it launched the Professional Lacrosse Hall of Fame with an inaugural class of 11.

NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman began her four-year term at the helm of the league in 2022. Throughout the search process, the players were primary stakeholders in identifying the next person to lead the emerging organization, and Berman’s past experiences uniquely positioned her for the task.

Prior to assuming her role, Berman built a career championing both athletes and fans as the deputy commissioner of the National Lacrosse League. She was also the first-ever woman to hold the deputy commissioner position in a professional men’s league in the United States. Before that, she spent 13 years with the NHL, ending her time with dual roles as the Vice President of Community Development, Culture & Growth and the Executive Director of the NHL Foundation.

In an interview with the “Attacking Third” podcast, Berman said that her position with the NWSL offers her the opportunity to blend her past experiences, working at the intersections of professional sports leagues and labor relations. She touted the NWSL’s immense promise, explaining “the strength of a sports property built through its partnership with the union.” In her short time with the league, she has helped navigate the implications of the US Soccer investigation and is actively creating a league with the protection of its players at the center.

With record-setting attendance and citywide commitments to the cause, the NWSL is on the precipice of a major breakthrough.

As we gear up for CNBC x Boardroom’s Game Plan conference this summer, let’s learn more about one of the event’s featured speakers, Larry Jackson.

Today, we’re highlighting featured speaker Larry Jackson, music executive and co-founder/CEO of Gamma. Click here to view the full list of CNBC x Boardroom Game Plan speakers.

It’s only been two months since Apple Music executive Larry Jackson launched Gamma. The media company and record label, backed by funding from Apple, A24, and Todd Boehly’s Eldridge, gained traction immediately. Gamma has acquired distribution platform Vydia, invested in Snoop Dogg’s revitalized Death Row Records, and struck deals with Usher, Rick Ross, and Naomi Campbell.

Looking ahead, Jackson said he wants Gamma to be an alternative to the big, traditional record labels rather than just another one of them, prioritizing long-term licensing to provide artists more control over their work along the way.

Beyond music, Gamma is not only pursuing podcast and film projects with A24 and viral sensation The Shade Room, but it is opening an office in Lagos, Nigeria with the help of Campbell and former Universal Music Group African CEO Sipho Dlamini. Already boasting an estimated five billion streams per month for artists, Gamma is well on its way toward disrupting the music industry.

Over the years, Jackson has worked with superstars like Jimmy Iovine, Dr. Dre, Whitney Houston, Jennifer Hudson, Kanye West, Lana Del Rey, and even helped champion artist-driven livestreams during the pandemic that led to the smash hit series VERZUZ — not bad for a kid who once willed his way into a radio station internship at just 11 years old at KMEL in San Francisco before becoming its program director at 17.

In acquiring online sportsbook PointsBet’s US operation, the ecommerce giant enters a new multibillion-dollar industry.

Fanatics, long known as a major player in sports apparel, recently made waves in making an ambitious push into the world of collectibles. Now, they’re blazing a whole new kind of trail that enhances their purview in no uncertain terms.

On Sunday, CNBC was first to report that the Michael Rubin-led company had reached a deal to acquire the PointsBet online sportsbook’s US business. Several hours later, the entities released a joint statement acknowledging that they had reached an agreement for the transaction.

Multiple outlets have noted that the deal is worth in the neighborhood of $150 million in cash. Comcast-owned NBCUniversal currently holds an equity stake in PointsBet that Fanatics will purchase.

As CNBC and others have noted, the PointsBet online sportsbook operates in 15 US states as of this writing. It gives Fanatics instant access to new markets pending regulatory approval. Competing in a sports betting marketplace dominated by well-established, big-spending brands like FanDuel and DraftKings, however, was always going to be difficult. With that in mind it’s notable that Matt King, the head of Fanatics Betting, is FanDuel’s former CEO.

The news is the latest in what has been an increasingly serious wave of acquisitions from Fanatics, including major trading card manufacturers Topps and Panini. It was essentially a foregone conclusion that betting would be the centerpiece of this next stage of the company’s expansion. We now have our most important clue as to how it all could look.

PointsBet — whose existing stock is publicly traded on the Australian Securities Exchange — will convene shareholders for a vote regarding the acquisition this summer.

A Spartan’s Spirit: Joe De Sena https://boardroom.tv/joe-de-sena-spartan-race/ Wed, 30 Mar 2022 14:10:36 +0000 https://boardroom.tv/?post_type=post&p=26052 The Spartan Race founder reflects on the hustle he absorbed growing up in a neighborhood run by gangsters and his path from pool boy to CEO of a global company on this week’s episode

The Spartan Race founder reflects on the hustle he absorbed growing up in a neighborhood run by gangsters and his path from pool boy to CEO of a global company on this week’s episode of “Out of Office.”

Joe De Sena had a different kind of childhood.

“If you saw Goodfellas, my family lived in ground zero for that movie. Right in Howard Beach. … Everybody in the neighborhood was was either coming out of jail, going into jail, mixing cement, or making pizza. … The common thread amongst all of them was that they all hustled. Men, women, they woke up [and] they just got it done.

“If you weren’t hustling you were left behind.”

That hustler’s spirit imprinted on the kid from Queens. On this week’s episode of Boardroom’s “Out of Office” podcast with Rich Kleiman, De Sena looks back on his winding journey from starting his first business at the age of 12 to launching a global company.

De Sena’s young life was guided, in part, by the action of his surroundings.

“I woke up as a young child and went into my garage, and there were boxes of things. And I was like, gee, why do we have a thousand pairs of leather gloves in the garage? … ‘Stuff didn’t make it where it was supposed to go,’ my father used to say. “

His father was among the many men around him who were directly or tangentially involved in “the garbage business.”

When he was a preteen, his neighbor, who was the boss of an organized crime family, promised him $35 to clean some pools, but he had three rules:

  1. On time is late.
  2. If I’m paying you to clean the pool, you gotta go above and beyond.
  3. Never ask me for money. Don’t ask anybody for money. If you do a good job, you get paid.

The young De Sena took those to heart, developing the work ethic that has served as the cornerstone of his success ever since.

For De Sena, work became a point of consistency amidst a bit of chaos in his surroundings. It afforded him control that he struggled to find elsewhere. After his grandmother’s illness brought his own mom to one of New York’s only health food stores, she had a chance encounter that led her to become a devout vegan and yogi. Soon after, his parents’ marriage unraveled, and she moved to Ithaca.

Although he spent the bulk of his time upstate, De Sena returned to Queens each weekend to keep his business intact. And it wasn’t until it was nearly too late that he realized that despite his massive success in the pool cleaning business, he wanted to try out something a little more traditional.

“I had no interest in going to college. It wasn’t on the road map,” he recalls.

This proved true until a friend of his promised that his dad, a professor at the prestigious Cornell University, could get them in even in spite of their poor grades and worse SAT scores. Although the back door plan didn’t work out for De Sena, his sights were set on a new goal, and the fact that he was told that he couldn’t go was all he needed to ensure that he did.

His hustler’s mentality led him to take a roundabout route to his degree, but after a few years of auditing classes and making up for some lost time in the classroom, De Sena was accepted. However, he continued to keep his business bustling back in Queens.

A chance encounter led him to his next career move. De Sena had evolved his business from pools to bigger jobs. One day, he was retrieving a hefty payment from a local pharmacist, when he inquired about a stock tip. In minutes, his client orchestrated a purchase of some shares, and 24 hours later, De Sena was up $100,000.

He sold his pool business to the only two people who ever matched his work ethic: two Polish guys from the neighborhood, who continue to maintain the booming business to this day.

De Sena took his talents to Wall Street, where he leaned on the same skills that had driven his success. However, he was soon disenchanted by the greed that surrounded him. Kids were grinding and making stacks of cash, but their hunger for material wealth was voracious and could never be fully fed.

“Plus, I was getting chubby,” he recalls. A lifelong fitness fanatic, De Sena began to yearn for something different.

After selling his second venture, he moved to Vermont and started Spartan Race.

By 2019, the company was firing on all cylinders. He had just purchased his primary competitor, built out a huge business in Eastern Europe, and was ready to coast after years of tireless effort.

When the pandemic hit in 2020, his races had 400,000 registrants in 45 countries clamoring for their money back.

Since then, he’s been climbing his way back out and envisioning what’s next for the Spartan Race.

These days, De Sena can be seen on CNBC’s No Retreat Business Bootcamp, where he counsels entrepreneurs on the key skills for success. Recently, he traveled to the Ukraine border to transport resources to those suffering amidst the war.

While the last few years have bruised his Spartan spirit, De Sena is clear on one thing: it can never be broken.
