Nike, Jordan Emerge as Most Popular Sneaker Brands
Sneakers are big business. A recent Statista industry report revealed that there is a $75 billion market and it is expected to grow to $100 billion by 2028. The report also crowns the Swoosh as number one. Nike commands 18% of the market share. Jordan Brand took the second spot with 11% with Adidas (9%), Sketchers (7%), and Vans (7%) rounding out the top five.
X Takes Over @music Account as Rebranding Continues
Twitter’s turnover to X continues. Over the weekend, the @music account, which had half a million followers, was overtaken by the company. The original account started in 2007 and featured updates and performances from a range of musical acts from across genres. Jeremy Vaught, a software engineer who controlled the account, told the press that he was “super pissed” following the takeover. He was granted @musicfan as a consolation but is fearful that Elon Musk and company may have pilfered that from another user. He summarized the situation for CNBC, saying, “The whole thing is just skeezy.” It’s unclear what X will do with the account at this time. Meanwhile, Musk declared that his upcoming cage match will be live streamed on X, though Mark Zuckerberg indicated that he was less sure that the showdown would happen.
'Barbie' Breaks $1B as Summer Blockbuster Season Heats Up
Summer blockbuster season is in full swing. Barbie continued its wicked success at the box office as it broke $1 billion in ticket sales over the weekend, bringing in an additional $53 million to boost the global total to $1.03 billion. Audiences across the country tried to beat the heat, banking $180 million. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Meg 2: The Trench outpaced expectations, bringing in $28 million and $30 million respectively. Oppenheimer became the highest-grossing World War II film with an additional $28.7 million.
WWE Summer Slam Notches New Viewership Record
It was a big weekend for combat sports. WWE’s annual Summer Slam took place on Saturday at Ford Field. The event drew an audience of greater than 59,000, setting a record gate of any non-Wrestle Mania property at $8.5 million. The WWE also welcomed the return of key sponsor, Slim Jim, as part of a record-setting sponsorship draw of $7 million. It also fueled the biggest audience of any WWE event on Peacock, plus an additional 100 million video views across social platforms.

Veteran defender Julie Ertz followed the game, noting that it was her final wearing an American kit. Drake is no stranger to a high stakes sports bet. This weekend, he logged a $250,000 ticket, placing his weight behind Nate Diaz to take down Jake Paul. Alas, his cold streak continues, as Paul handily took home the win with a unanimous decision. After the match, Paul reveled in his victory and challenged Diaz to a rematch in MMA. The former UFC champ Diaz was open to the idea. Paul and the PFL would offer $10 million to make the match a reality.
